What is Speed Reading Literacy?

Speed Reading Literacy reads your searches

Speed Reading Literacy is a browser add-on that changes text color to make it easier to read. Not sure how much that helps, but it does work as advertised.

But this add-on does more – something that is not revealed in its description on the Chrome Web Store page or on its home page Speedreadingliteracy.com. It redirects internet search.

  1. Speed Reading Literacy listens for when you visit Google.com and Bing.com to search the web.
  2. It reads the URL and strips out the search query. As you can imagine, this is not great for your privacy.
  3. It opens a new browser tab. It opens Speedreadingliteracy.com and adds your search query and some other data in the URL.
  4. Finally, Speed Reading Literacy closes your original search page. This happens so quickly that it looks as if your search was redirected to another site.

You might also notice nothing strange if you use DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, or another smaller search engine. From what I can tell, Speed Reading Literacy only looks for Google and Bing search result URLs.

You might also notice nothing strange if you found and installed Speed Reading Literacy yourself. You must have seen an ad for the extension in order to trigger the search redirects.

Speed Reading Literacy shows as having 2,000+ users on the Chrome Web Store.

It controls your search results

Speed Reading Literacy sends your search queries to Speedreadingliteracy.com, but Speedreadingliteracy.com is not a search engine. It can’t show web search results. So it decides what site to open next.

It might open the results on Google or Bing, or it might take you to Fxsmash.xyz, Mybrowser-search.com, or another more obscure alternative search engine. It is inconsistent. It can look as if only every other search is hijacked. From my personal experience, this can make a person feel like a bit they’re going crazy.

Browser add-ons like Speed Reading Literacy are used to force people to visit certain websites which make more money the more people visit them. The Speedreadingliteracy.com privacy policy also says that data about users may be used to improve targeted advertising.

Because Speed Reading Literacy affects internet search in an unhelpful way, it can be considered a browser hijacker.

How to stop Speed Reading Literacy search redirects

If you find your browser opening unexpected sites on its own, especially forwarding your search queries to unknown and unwanted sites, then a bad browser extension should be your first suspect. Speed Reading Literacy is extremely similar to Easy Eyes, Dark Mode View, and others.

Uninstall the Speed Reading Literacy extension to stop it from reading your search terms and taking you to potentially unwanted sites.

Below are instructions for how to manually remove browser extensions and change your search engine settings.

Consider how Speed Reading Literacy was installed.

  • If it came bundled with a free program as an optional offer, then you may want to scan your computer with an antivirus tool (such as Spyhunter for Windows, Spyhunter for Mac, Combo Cleaner for macOS, others) to see if there are any more bundlers, adware infections, etc.
  • If you got it from an ad online, then consider using an ad blocker. It would help you avoid a lot of the ads that push hijackers and other potentially unwanted programs.
