Preciousbible.com New Tab - How to remove

Preciousbible.com, aka Precious Bible, is a new tab browser extension that, instead of helping brighten up the day for religious folks, tries to steer them to click on affiliate links and go to sites owned by Preciousbible.com’s creators and partners. Preciousbible.com offers all of three entire links to Bible-related sites, which is pathetic functionality to offer. And it doesn’t always get installed honestly – those who found it often had already been dealing with a search hijacker. There are much better Bible apps and extensions than Preciousbible.com, as this one is just plain adware.

What’s wrong with Preciousbible.com new tab?

Precious Bible replaces your browser’s new tab page and reads your browsing history. Simply, it’s a browser hijacker, which is a type of adware. We look at ads to “pay” for free content online, and adware like Preciousbible.com skews this balance when they provide too little or no content/functionality while exposing you to more ads. Not exactly illegal and not necessarily malicious, but it also brings no value to users, only taking advantage of them and wasting their time with ads spying on their private browsing habits.

Precious Bible does this by hijacking your browser. A web browser is a program for displaying and interacting with the internet – you’re using one to read this article. People use browsers to do online banking, shopping, chat with their friends, etc. Precious Bible works as a browser extension, a little program that’s supposed to enhance a browser with unique features.

It seems like it could be a nice way to enhance your browser’s new tab page by adding daily Bible quotes and links to resources on the Bible. And though Preciousbible.com does technically provide these features, that’s not its main goal. Preciousbible.com changes your new tab page so that it can put front-and-center an affiliate link to a search engine (Yahoo) and take you there to look at the search results and all the ads.

According to its privacy policy, Preciousbible.com does not collect your search query data, only Yahoo does. But they still read your browsing history to, among other things, “Enable service providers and us to serve relevant content and advertising”.

Preciousbible.com has a few different promotional screens.

How Preciousbible.com gets installed

Preciousbible.com is made by Innover Group, which has a template that it sticks to when making browser extensions, making them cheap and quick to produce. And Precious Bible follows this template to a T:

  • replace the new tab page,
  • add a prominent search bar that opens an affiliated search engine,
  • add some links to popular sites,
  • put a few links at the top that lead to relevant sites – these three links are the only things that make “Precious Bible” different from Flight Tab Pro, Maps Assist, and other Innover’s products.

So, if Preciousbible.com is so bad, how come around ten thousand people decided to install it?

There are a few explanations.

First, I doubt that Preciousbible.com got popular on its own. Despite having thousands of users, it has two ratings and no reviews across all the versions that I found. This is not how organically marketed browser extensions look. Compare Preciousbible.com to the Holy Bible extension, which has 500 users and 9 reviews.

I noticed that Preciousbible.com was often found by those who had been looking for Bible Gateway, YouVersion Bible, and other apps not related to Preciousbible.com. I also noticed that dubious search engines like Kensaq and Hidemysearches were being used. Showing that it’s likely that those who found Preciousbible.com found it because adware promoted it to them.

Kensaq and Hidemysearches are adware search engines that take search results from Google.com or another site and inject a few more ads. They make money without providing any new or unique features. Oh, and the ads that they show tend to be less than great: irrelevant online store pages, browser hijackers, and links to other adware search engines.

It’s also possible that Preciousbible.com was installed by a bundler as an optional offer. Bundlers are programs that say they’re a single program, but their installer includes multiple optional offers that will be installed at the same time – unless you laboriously remove the ticks from each and every checkbox that agrees to allow the installations. And even then, some of them install malware in the background. New tab hijackers have always used this method to spread.

How to remove Preciousbible.com

Unintentional installation of browser extensions isn’t anything unusual. Luckily, getting rid of unwanted extensions is also quite simple: just right-click on the extension’s icon and click on the “Remove” option, or go to your browser settings and remove extensions from there. In some cases extensions stubbornly refuse to go away and then you may need the help of an antivirus program, like Combo Cleaner for Mac, Spyhunter for PC, or another one.

Having your computer adware-free will improve your browsing experience and your online privacy. Remember to be careful before installing any new extensions: look up their developer (and don’t trust the ones that hide their identity), think about the permissions that an extension asks for, and read the privacy policy to make sure that you’re okay with what’s done with your data.
