About Ocelot Locker Ransomware

Once inside of your computer, Ocelot Locker Ransomware will scan your system for files that it could lock. And basically, this ransomware can lock almost any file that you use – photos, videos, music files, text documents, .exe files and so on. Once the scan is over, this sneaky virus will lock all of them and put a specific extension on all of them. The extension is not known yet, we will keep you updated on that. Once the extension is on, you will not be able to open or use the file in any other way.

Right after that, a message on your desktop will appear. It looks like this:

All your personal documents, videos, mp3 files, images,
or any other files have been encrypted with a military
grade encryption key. The key has been stored on our
server. For you to get this key you will have to pay 00.3
BTC (25 USD) and the key will be given to you’The Small Ransom Payment is Intended to Serve as an Incentive for Users to Pay

As you can see, they suggest users to pay the ransom in order to retrieve unlocked files.  And even though it is relevantly small amount of money (about 25 USD at the current BTC rate), you should not do it. First of all, there are no guarantees that you will retrieve your files even if you pay the ransom and you can never trust cyber criminals. Secondly, this way you would support scammers and that’s not something you would want to do.

Now, in order to retrieve files locked by Ocelot Locker Ransomware you should use special software, also known as decrypter. Unfortunately, this software is not developed yet. However, there is another way to get back your files – perform system recover. To put it into other words, restore previous version of your files, back to the date they were not encrypted. In order to be able to perform this restore, you have to have a valid copy of your hard drive. Here’s a tutorial how to do that: https://www.2-viruses.com/how-to-do-a-system-restore

Step 3. Restore Ocelot Locker Ransomware affected files using Shadow Volume Copies

If you do not use System Restore option on your operating system, there is a chance to use shadow copy snapshots. They store copies of your files that point of time when the system restore snapshot was created. Usually Ocelot Locker Ransomware tries to delete all possible Shadow Volume Copies, so this methods may not work on all computers. However, it may fail to do so. Shadow Volume Copies are only available with Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. There are two ways to retrieve your files via Shadow Volume Copy. You can do it using native Windows Previous Versions or via Shadow Explorer. a) Native Windows Previous Versions Right-click on an encrypted file and select PropertiesPrevious versions tab. Now you will see all available copies of that particular file and the time when it was stored in a Shadow Volume Copy. Choose the version of the file you want to retrieve and click Copy if you want to save it to some directory of your own, or Restore if you want to replace existing, encrypted file. If you want to see the content of file first, just click Open.

Step 4. Use Data Recovery programs to recover Ocelot Locker Ransomware encrypted files

There are several data recovery programs that might recover encrypted files as well. This does not work in all cases but you can try this:
  • We suggest using another PC and connect the infected hard drive as slave. It is still possible to do this on infected PC though.
  • Download a data recovery program.
  • Install and scan for recently deleted files. Data Recovery Pro
Note: In many cases it is impossible to restore data files affected by modern ransomware. Thus I recommend using decent cloud backup software as precaution. We recommend checking out Carbonite, BackBlaze, CrashPlan or Mozy Home.
