Maktub Locker is a new ransomware that might enter your system and lock files stored on hard drive, so you won’t be able to open, view or use them in any other way.
It is a dangerous virus that is distributed through spam emails. If you have noticed that your computer is infected with it and you can’t access your personal files, the first thing you need to is to remove the virus from your system and only then try to retrieve your encrypted files.
To eliminate Maktub Locker from your computer, you will need some help from anti-malware software, such as Spyhunter or Malwarebytes. Simply download one of them and scan your system with it. Either one of these applications should detect the location of Maktub Locker and eliminate it automatically. It will also protect your computer from similar infections in the future, so it’s worth to keep it installed.
However, anti-malware software can’t decrypt your files. The only way to do it at the moment is to restore encrypted files from a backup copy of your hard drive. About Maktub Locker ransomware
The main goal of this ransomware is to infect computers, encrypt personal files and ask for the ransom in order unlock them. It’s not very difficult to notice whether your computer is infected with Maktub Locker or not because once it encrypts your files, you will see a message that looks like this on your desktop:
Warning! Your personal files are encrypted!
Your documents, photos, databases and other important files have been encrypted with strongest encryption and unique key, generated for this computer. Private decryption key is stored on a secret Internet server and nobody can decrypt your files until you pay and obtain the private key. The server will eliminate the key after a time period specified in this window.
As you can see, the cyber criminals are saying the after 12 hours from encryption, your private decryption key will be deleted without any possibilities to restore it, so your files will be lost forever. It’s just another manipulation by hackers in order to force users to bay the ransom.
They also offers users to upload one encrypted file, so they would decrypt it and send it back to you as a proof that they have the power to unlock your files. However, even if you pay the ransom, there are no guarantees that your files will be decrypted, thus we do not recommend to do that. If you have a copy of your hard drive, use our instructions and restore your files. If you don’t, just wait for other solutions, such as decryption tool developed by cyber security experts. In the meantime, make sure you eliminate Maktub Locker from your computer and protect your system with reliable anti-malware application because Maktub Locker can infiltrate other malware into it.

Usually Maktub Locker tries to delete all possible Shadow Volume Copies, so this methods may not work on all computers. However, it may fail to do so. Shadow Volume Copies are only available with Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. There are two ways to retrieve your files via Shadow Volume Copy. You can do it using native Windows Previous Versions or via Shadow Explorer. a) Native Windows Previous Versions Right-click on an encrypted file and select Properties → Previous versions tab. If you want to see the content of file first, just click Open.
b) Shadow Explorer It is a program that can be found online for free. You can download either a full or a portable version of Shadow Explorer. Open the program. On the left top corner select the drive where the file you are looking for is a stored. You will see all folders on that drive. To retrieve a whole folder, right-click on it and select “Export”. Then choose where you want it to be stored.
