GILLETTE Ransomware - How to remove

GILLETTE ransomware is a new crypto virus that can completely take over your system – it is capable of encrypting all of your personal files and blocking your access to them until you pay the ransom. That is why it is called ransomware. Cyber criminals that created this infection claim that there is no other way to retrieve your locked files than contacting them and paying the ransom in Bitcoins. However, we would like to argue with that, since there are some strategies to eliminate the damage done by ransomware that was proven to be really successful.

GILLETTE Virus Encryption

GILLETTE Ransomware removal

To start encrypting files and messing up with your system this infection needs to get inside the computer and most of the time that is achieved by sending spam emails with malicious files attached to them. Cyber criminals explore various Social engineering techniques and convince users that some very important data are waiting for them in the files attached to the letter. Users with less experience in this field easily fall for the trick and open the attached file. That’s enough to get your computer infected, so be very careful about emails from spam category, especially ones with files attached to them.

Also, keep in mind, that the very fact that you are receiving such emails is a red flag – most probably some malware is already operating on your computer and collecting data about you. This data is then used to attack you and infect the computer with more severe viruses. That’s why we always highlight the fact that even the smallest infection or bug in your system can lead to tons of problems. This is why you should protect your system with professional anti-malware tool all the time.

However, if your computer is already infected with GILLETTE and it’s too late for prevention, it will automatically start encrypting various files that are stored on your hard drive. Unfortunatelly, it is capable of encrypting all sorts of files, such as text documents, pictures, audio and video files, etc. After the encryption, your files will be marked with the extension .gillette. That’s where it got its’ name from. For example, if you had a file “text.txt”, now it will be renamed to “text.txt.gillette” and you won’t be able to open it anymore. Plus, immediately after that you should notice a ransom note on your desktop and it goes like this:

All your important files are encrypted
There is only one way to get your files back: contact with us, pay, and get decryptor software.
We accept Bitcoin
You have Your personal identifier, write it in letter when contact with us.
Also you can decrypt 1 file for test, its guarantee what we can decrypt your files.

Attention!
Do not rename encrypted files.
Do not try to decrypt using third party software, it may cause permanent data loss.
For decrypt your data write to email

Contact information: [email protected]
and tell us your unique ID – ********

We have already mentioned that they are using social engineering techniques to distribute the virus, and you can see it in here too – they encourage users to contact them with 1 encrypted file, so they could prove their powers to decrypt it and send instructions for the payment, building some trust this way.

It is a common trick used by various ransomware viruses – Kroput, NWA, CrazyCrypt, and so on. Unfortunately, there are no guarantees that you will get the decryption key, even if they are capable of doing that. That’s why you shouldn’t even try to contact them.

Finally, it is known how much Bitcoins you will be asked in an exchange of your personal files, but regardless of the amount, you should not do it. Instead of that, use instructions provided below to remove the virus and recover your files for free. That’s a way better option than supporting cyber criminals and paying the ransom.

Removal of GILLETTE Ransomware

GILLETTE virus can’t spread to other computers on the same network, but it definitely can repeat the encryption process on the infected system, so before even trying to decrypt your files you should take care of this infection. The best way to remove GILLETTE is to use Spyhunter and scan your computer with one of those programs. The virus and all files associated with it will be immediately detected and removed from your system for good.

Now, you can move on and retrieve your files. Arguably the most efficient method to do it is to perform a system restore and turn your system back to the date prior to the infection. There might be cases where this action is unavailable, so you can also follow instructions below for alternative options.

Step 2. Complete removal of GILLETTE Ransomware

After restoring your system, it is recommended to scan your computer with an anti-malware program, like Spyhunter and remove all malicious files related to GILLETTE ransomware. You can check other tools here.

Step 3. Restore GILLETTE Ransomware affected files using Shadow Volume Copies

If you do not use System Restore option on your operating system, there is a chance to use shadow copy snapshots. They store copies of your files that point of time when the system restore snapshot was created. Usually GILLETTE ransomware tries to delete all possible Shadow Volume Copies, so this methods may not work on all computers. However, it may fail to do so. Shadow Volume Copies are only available with Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. There are two ways to retrieve your files via Shadow Volume Copy. You can do it using native Windows Previous Versions or via Shadow Explorer. a) Native Windows Previous Versions Right-click on an encrypted file and select PropertiesPrevious versions tab. Now you will see all available copies of that particular file and the time when it was stored in a Shadow Volume Copy. Choose the version of the file you want to retrieve and click Copy if you want to save it to some directory of your own, or Restore if you want to replace existing, encrypted file. If you want to see the content of file first, just click Open.

b) Shadow Explorer It is a program that can be found online for free. You can download either a full or a portable version of Shadow Explorer. Open the program. On the left top corner select the drive where the file you are looking for is a stored. You will see all folders on that drive. To retrieve a whole folder, right-click on it and select “Export”. Then choose where you want it to be stored.

Step 4. Use Data Recovery programs to recover GILLETTE Ransomware encrypted files

There are several data recovery programs that might recover encrypted files as well. This does not work in all cases but you can try this:
  • We suggest using another PC and connect the infected hard drive as slave. It is still possible to do this on infected PC though.
  • Download a data recovery program.
  • Install and scan for recently deleted files. Data Recovery Pro
Note: In many cases it is impossible to restore data files affected by modern ransomware. Thus I recommend using decent cloud backup software as precaution. We recommend checking out Carbonite, BackBlaze, CrashPlan or Mozy Home.
