GetSeniorResources - How to remove

GetSeniorResources is a browser add-on that replaces your home page with one of Mindspark’s. It offers its own internet search and a bunch of links to senior resources. And though it’s not a dangerous app, you might still want to uninstall it. It has some features of a browser hijacker and an adware program – it might expose you to more ads than you’re used to.

What is GetSeniorResources?

GetSeniorResources is a new tab replacer

GetSeniorResources is a browser extension.

When it is installed, it replaces the home/new tab page with its own. On this new home page, GetSeniorResources places its search bar (this bar lets you search the web through Myway.com), possibly an advertisement under it, as well as a bunch of links (including sponsored ones) around the page.

Since the theme of the GetSeniorResources extension is resources for seniors and baby boomers, most of the links on the GetSeniorResources home page are relevant to that: healthy living, retirement, etc. Links to babyboomers.com, retirementrevised.com, seniorsleague.org, and other sites are shared.

In addition to replacing the new tab page, GetSeniorResources also gets a few permissions: to send you notifications (they appear as little pop-ups in the lower right corner) and to read your browsing history, both of which are used to show you personalized content.

GetSeniorResources asks for a bunch of permissions.

What’s wrong with GetSeniorResources?

GetSeniorResources isn’t malicious or dangerous, but it’s still a little problematic.

Although it’s advertised as providing resources to seniors, its main purpose is to show advertisements. Think of it like this – GetSeniorResources is a browser extension equivalent of a clickbait site. It may have some valuable content buried somewhere, but its main product is advertising.

Unsurprisingly, GetSeniorResources was made by Mindspark – the same company that also released SMSfromBrowser, ConvertDocsOnline, 100sofRecipes, and dozens of other browser extensions. They all use the same format – a new tab/home page that has a few relevant links. They also all collect data about their users and show them ads.

They also lack customization, which is pretty essential to any new tab extension.

GetSeniorResources' home page is the same as that of all other Mindspark extensions.

How to remove GetSeniorResources

Remove extensions and check browser settings

Although GetSeniorResources is not all that malicious, it’s still advisable to uninstall this extension.

There are better, more customizable new tab extensions, as well as settings in your browser that let you personalize your home page (How to Customise Your Web Browser’s Homepage (and Why You Should)). And there are plenty of resources for seniors (15 Best Online Resources For Baby Boomers) that you can pick and choose from and pin your favorites to your quick links for easy access.

The instructions for how to remove GetSeniorResources can be found below – uninstalling browser extensions, just like installing them, is very simple.

But you may also want to check your notification settings:

  • Chrome – open Settings, scroll down to Site settings (under Privacy and security), click on Notifications.
  • Edge – open Settings, click Site PermissionsNotifications.
  • Safari – in the Safari menu, choose PreferencesWebsitesNotifications.
  • Firefox – open SettingsPrivacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.

Even after GetSeniorResources is removed, Getseniorresources.com or another site might still show you pop-ups now and then, but you can always block them in your notification settings. Just find the unwanted site and, if it’s set to “Allowed”, switch its permission to “Blocked”.

Remove malware and adware

In general, Mindpspark’s extensions are flagged by multiple antivirus scanners (check out this EasyPDFCombine scan result on VirusTotal – Adware, Riskware, Malicious, Pup, etc.). So, you might be able to use an antivirus program (like Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, and others) to find and remove GetSeniorResources and other potentially unwanted browser extensions.

The thing is, GetSeniorResources and similar add-ons often get installed in groups of two or three with hijackers like the Search Application by Ask. Also, they often get installed by bundlers – programs that show ads inside their installers. So, it’s worth it to have an antivirus program check your computer and see if there are any bundlers, hijackers, and adware programs on it. If there are, it’s best to delete them.
