E-Installer Hijacker - How to remove

E-Installer is a browser extension associated with the E-Installer.com site. In theory, it’s supposed to help people download useful free software. But it instead forces people to go to Ibrowsersearch.com to search the web. E-Installer.com doesn’t really download software and its extension is a browser hijacker and an infection risk.

Problems with E-Installer

Unwanted installation

First, E-Installer is clearly associated with the E-Installer.com site (which is a clone of the Apppinstall.com site).

A lot of visitors to it had to install E-Installer to download any files. A few other sites, especially browser gaming sites, also required visitors to get E-Installer or at least advertised it. Not for any good reason – it doesn’t seem to have useful features. It was for helping E-Installer.com make money, which they do by showing you ads through the extension.

This is just like the Games Lol case – forcing people to install extensions that then hijack their search. Also, looks like E-Installer may have outsourced some of its files to Ravenfile.com, which also does the same thing by forcing Search Manager on people.

Dubious files

E-Installer does not just read your browsing history and hijack your search. It can also manage your downloads and open downloaded files. Which makes it quite the security risk. What if some of the files it downloads are dangerous?

E-installer.com hosts a lot of programs. Some of them already available elsewhere on the internet for free, like Chromium, Paint.net, and CCleaner. But then there are also some strange ones, like GTA V and Kingdom Hearts III – expensive programs that should only be sold on approved stores. Is E-Installer a pirating site?

I tried out a few of those files. Turns out, they’re bundlers – or they’re supposed to be. Mine didn’t really work but it looks like they’re supposed to download the promised software and a few additions to that. Some Antivirus programs think that there’s something not right with E-Installer’s download manager – fake GTA V was detected by 9 out of 69 security programs.

E-Installer is introduced as "Game Manager" on some sites.

Symptoms of a hijacking

E-Installer has some unwanted effects of your browser that make it a possibly malicious item:

  • You might have installed E-Installer without wanting to and without realizing what it would do to your browser. You may not have even agreed to it.
  • With E-Installer installed in your browser, you will notice its little icon next to your address bar. Clicking on it shows a small list of programs. If you click on them, E-Installer.com is opened.
  • It is set as your new search engine, too, by the extension. This redirects all your web searches there. By the way, E-Installer.com is not encrypted, so your queries are not hidden from your ISP and other spies.
  • Searching the web now causes Ibrowsersearch.com to return your results. This alternative search engine shows more ads than you might be used to and it has no useful features, like filtering by date or language.

How to remove E-Installer

E-Installer can be removed from your browser like any extension: either by right-clicking on the extension’s icon and clicking “Remove”, or by opening browser settings and removing it from there. Take this chance to review all of your extensions. Did you install any other probably useless stuff? Each extension is a little privacy risk, so it’s good to only keep the ones you use regularly and get rid of everything else.

You might want to scan your computer with a security program, like Combo Cleaner for Mac or SpyHunter for PC, to check if you downloaded any potentially dangerous applications. If you did, you should probably remove them.

Be careful of the various freeware distribution sites. Chromium, Paint.net, CCleaner, and most other programs that E-Installer was offering can be downloaded on their own sites. There, you can be sure that they’re the original versions. On the other hand, freeware sites often wrap programs in their own managers that offer and install adware, unwanted browser extensions, and malicious ads.
