Problems with Bitfly.io

Unavoidable ads

Bitfly.io is a URL shortener that allows links to be monetized with ads. It shows ads before allowing you to access the destination site.

People share Bitfly.io because they want to make money off of each person who clicks the link. This is laid out in Bitfly.io’s terms of service.

Although Bitfly.io is not inherently dangerous, it is full of ads, many of which are dubious and potentially lead to scams. Bitfly.io makes it almost impossible to avoid clicking on an advertisement. As a result, it is likely to expose you to malicious webpages.

These ads are very difficult to avoid for a few reasons:

  • Bitfly.io shows ads that are deliberately made to look like buttons for downloading files and watching videos. They are meant to confuse people.
  • It also shows ads that look like notifications. These ads can look like genuine messages or warnings from your device or applications.
  • If your browser’s privacy and security settings aren’t properly configured, then even more pop-ups will show up.
  • Bitfly.io displays ads even when you don’t click on an advertisement. It opens pop-ups when you click anywhere on the page and even when you click the real Continue button.

Even if you’re diligent and check all links before clicking, it’s very unlikely that you can avoid all the advertisements.

Potentially dangerous ads

Some of the ads on Bitfly.io are completely safe, such as reputable online stores and some local businesses. Ali Express and Express VPN are advertised a lot.

Other ads are less safe, such as gambling and betting ads, computer “cleaners”, and “investment” sites. Ignore them and you should be fine, however, if you interact with any of these ads, it can lead you to potentially exploitative sites that include scams and malware.

Besides, all the ads open new browser tabs, which wastes your time.

Links to Bitfly.io may be preceded by various ads and redirects. For example, I discovered Bitfly.io when looking at Mobil-izle.xyz – one site in a group of notification hijackers and redirects.

How to avoid ads by Bitfly.io

To get past Bitfly.io, you need to first pass the “I’m not a robot” captcha, then wait for the 10-second countdown. Then click the button “Get Link”, which can be found at the bottom. If you click on it normally, Bitfly.io still opens new tabs with advertisements in them. Eventually, though, it does open the real destination.

Bitfly.io shows way too any ads.

Avoid unwanted ads

Bitfly.io and other URL monetizers are used by infringing download sites (pirate sites), adult video sites, and similar websites. One way to avoid them would be sticking to paid websites that don’t show ads at all.

Another way to avoid unexpected ads is to use an ad blocker, such as a browser extension. Bitfly.io is usually included in the blacklist and blocked by default, however, you can make an exception for it. You can also use an anti-malware program that blocks malicious webpages.

Also, you can use URL shortener bypassing services. These can work very well for the more popular shorteners. They can unshorten the URL or bypass it for you.

Finally, if you allowed Bitfly.io or another site to access your notifications and they started showing little pop-up ads in the corner of your screen, block unwanted notifications in your browser.

Check all files and websites

It’s hard to avoid the ads that Bitfly.io displays without avoiding the site itself. Besides, Bitfly.io is only one of many similar sites that are used for monetization. For example, Fc.lc looks almost exactly like Bitfly.io. Avoiding them would require you to change your browsing habits, which might be too much.

The important thing is to double-check everything, to be patient, and not download or run files without making sure that they’re safe:

  • Scan the files that you download with an antivirus tool or check them on an online scanner.
  • Don’t interact with suspicious webpages. Most importantly, don’t reveal your personal information to websites that you’re not entirely familiar with.

Use anti-malware programs like Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, and others to scan the files that you download. Use anti-malware programs to block malicious websites. And ignore suspicious websites.
