What kind of extension is Bethegamepro.com?

Gaming News Feed/Bethegamepro.com is a browser add-on for Google Chrome and Chromium-based browsers. I first found it while looking at Safe2Search, a dubious browser add-on that takes over web browsers after offering safe search – a basic feature of search engines that does not need a browser add-on to function.

What about Bethegamepro.com, is it better than Safe2Search?

Bethegamepro.com replaces the default search engine

Gaming News Feed is a browser add-on that replaces your new tab page and your default search engine with Bethegamepro.com. On the new tab, the extension shows a gaming news feed. The news links open reputable websites, such as IGN and PC Gamer.

The search bar on the new tab and the address bar at the top both lead to Yahoo.com. This is despite Gaming News Feed’s description on the Chrome Web Store saying that it uses Bing search (though I suppose Yahoo does get its search results from Bing, so it’s sort of correct).

Bethegamepro.com’s stated purpose is to give users quick access to gaming news. There’s no way to customize what news you want to see. There are very few sites whose articles are shared. Overall, the newsfeed works, but it’s a little disappointing.

But why does the extension change your search engine settings? According to Google, extensions should only have one purpose. Having your default search engine changed doesn’t really help improve the gaming news feed.

Bethegamepro.com's new tab does show gaming news cards.

It logs user data

Bethegamepro.com doesn’t give you a way to choose your preferred search site on the new tab. It also shows tiles with sponsored links to sites like Booking.com – not very useful to most people. Luckily, these tiles can be turned off in the extension’s settings.

Likely, the operators of Bethegamepro.com make money from advertising and promoting a specific search engine. Browser extensions are great at this because they can control browser settings and read user data, such as their browsing history and search queries.

According to Gaming News Feed’s privacy policy on Bethegamepro.com, the extension logs user data such as search history and browsing history. It uses this data to show relevant ads. Search and browsing data can reveal personal information, but Gaming News Feed promises to delete such bits of data when it finds them.

If the Software installed by the user is a browser extension or a search related product, Mania Tech may collect the User’s search related data. This data may include data related to the URLs of websites that the User visited. Mania Tech will collect this type of data as an aggregated Non-Personal Data. However, web browsing data may contain data that could be deemed to be Personal Data. Mania Tech will delete this type of data a short time after the collection. We will use this data in order to provide certain features of the Software, such as display relevant advertising based on searches

The Bethegamepro.com site/Gaming News Feed extension is not dangerous. For one, Bethegamepro.com has a clear privacy policy, which is more than can be said about certain other search hijackers (Bbbn.xyz).

But the add-on also seems pretty unhelpful. It feels like Gaming News Feed is better at collecting data and redirecting searches than it is at helping gamers get their news.

How to stop redirects by Bethegamepro.com

If you like the Bethegamepro.com new tab, don’t mind having to use Yahoo.com (or Bing.com) to search the web, and are okay with your data being used to show you targeted ads, then there’s no need to worry about this extension.

But if you want to stop seeing Bethegamepro.com, you can do that manually or with an anti-malware app (such as Malwarebytes). Check your browser settings – you’re free to decide what sites show up in your new tab and what your favorite search engine is.

If you can’t remove Gaming News Feed (for example, if the Remove button doesn’t work, if your browser says that it’s “managed by your organization”), then there might be other files and settings keeping it on your device (configuration profiles on Macs, registry entries on PCs).
