What is the World's Largest Cloud Provider?

April 20th, 2010

Last week, computer technologists have been discussing the issue of cloud providers at the Cloud Connect conference in Santa Clara, Ca. It turned out that the word’s largest cloud provider is owned by a criminal gang. Conficker, the biggest computer warm since 2003, which is targeting the Microsoft Windows operating system, has beaten world’s largest legitimate cloud providers such as Google, Amazon and Microsoft.

According to Rodney Joffe, senior vice president and senior technologist at the infrastructure services firm Neustar, Conficker takes control of over 6 million computer systems in more than 200 countries, more than 18 million CPUs and 28 terabits per second of bandwidth. At the same time, world’s giant Google made up of 500,000 systems, 1 million CPUs and 1,500 Gbps of bandwidth.

The network of Conficker is used for distributing infections, stealing personal information of computer users and hacking computers. Many of the comment spam on the blogs are produced from the Conflicker cloud. The botnet cloud can be found anywhere in the world and used for all the above mentioned purposes.

Even though Conficker is not at its highest power at the moment, it is still considered to be not only a danger of a computer being infected by a virus but a danger to enter into criminal project.
