Thank you very much for your great guide. I did step by step as you said, though I used Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware program which was already installed my system. The XP Security Tool is removed and my system is working now. Thanks again.

CD good to hear that it helped, though I would recommend upgrading malwarebytes – obviously your version has no protection capabilities.

    Holy Hacker!

I knew there was something fishy when it had managed to scan my whole system (without my say so) in 30 seconds.

    Thanks tremendously for your guide.

After copying and pasting into notepad I was confused by #5 as far as saving as “fix.reg” and as “All files in Notepad”. I didn’t get same result as everybody else. Now I get the following when I try to open anything (Word, Excel, Firefox, etc.)

“Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.”

Hi, I must say that I am sort of a computer geek, but I am in no way a genius, but at first I had the same problem so I figured I’d try to help you out. When the directions say to save as fix.reg, that is what you name the file. But below that line it also asks what type you’d like to save the file as. Usually giving you the choice, of ‘text documents’ and ‘all files’, in which case you’d chose ‘all files’. So if you’re still having this problem, my guess would be to repeat the process using the same instructions. Like I said Im not a genius, but I hope this helped you

I got just affected few minutes ago. I followed the instruction and it worked great. So how can I prevent this from happening again. I already have Mcaffee Viruscan installed in my computer and it did not detect anything. Nothing shows in the log. So i wonder which anti-spam/virus software is more effective

    • April 15th, 2010 at 10:09 | #11

Ret : I would recommend having better antivirus and anti-spyware protection. For antivirus I recommend ESET Nod32, for anti-spyware – Spyware doctor or paid version of malwarebytes.

Thanks so much! Your simple fix of “fix.reg” has just worked like a charm! I was running AVG Antivirus, and not only did it NOT catch this virus before it infected my computer yesterday, it didn’t even find it in a full scan after it got through….

    Your help was much appreciated!

    • April 18th, 2010 at 10:52 | #14

Dean: consider changing AVG if you run free version… it does not protect fully from all kinds of infections (e.g. no rootkit check), thus it gives false sense of security
