How to remove WinPCDoctor?

November 26th, 2007

What is WinPCDoctor?

WinPCDoctor is a rogue optimizer, seemingly by the same people who unleashed WinSecureAV upon the world (or at least it seems so judging from some identical quotes and the "win" part). It is actually the same as every other program of the same kind: it claims to be the best, intimidates with false errors and persuades users to buy the full version.

WinPCDoctor makes its way to your PC via Trojans such as Zlob. Once inside and active, it proceeds to bombard you with pop-ups and system notifications, all of which claim that you have serious errors that need to be dealt with. The pop-ups, when pressed, provide you with a solution to your problems : WinPCDoctor, a tool which says it is superior to any other of the kind and will surely take care of any problems you might have. If you fall for it – that’s easy money for the scammers who made the program and nothing for you in return.

As was mentioned above, the homepage of WinPCDoctor has some simillarities with WinSecureAV, such as the claim to be "one of the well-known leaders in the Internet security field", although this claim worked a lot better with the latter, which is supposedly an anti-spyware program : how an optimizer-making company can be one of the leaders in internet security is beyond me. The homepage has a few grammar mistakes, which is strange, having in mind that we’re talking about a "leader in the internet security field". There is the omnipresent lack of contact information aside from a form, which you can fill out. The website is registered to a person from Slovenia, whose email address is "no_name_inc@yahoo.com", a fact that does little to ensure credibility.

Do not buy this program. We recommend automatic removal, since doing it manually may be a difficult task. Also, block winpcdoctor.com in your host files.

WinPCDoctor is classified as Rogue Anti-Spyware. After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake security messages, stating that your computer is infected with spyware and only WinPCDoctor can help you to remove it after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads WinPCDoctor trial version, it pretends to scan your computer and shows a grossly exaggerated amount of non-existent errors. Then, WinPCDoctor offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, WinPCDoctor does not only fix the errors, but it also takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer.

Some Rogue Anti-Spyware, such as WinPCDoctor, may offer users to buy it after the victim clicks on a banner or a pop-up while surfing the internet. Usually, a Trojan is installed to a victim’s computer after clicking on the advertisement. It then proceeds to download or even install WinPCDoctor, which is another way for Rogue Anti-Spyware to spread itself.

Most of rogue Anti-Spyware, such as WinPCDoctor, is nearly impossible to remove manually.

How to tell if your PC has been infected by a Rogue Anti-Spyware such as WinPCDoctor?

Numerous undesirable and annoying pop-ups: A typical Rogue Anti-Spyware parasite keeps track of your internet browsing habits, sending your browsing history data to remote servers, owned by third party companies that use this information to advertise their products via numerous pop-ups, toolbars, hijacked homepages and spam letters. All these undesirable advertising methods are used on the victims of Rogue Anti-Spyware.
Changed or new icons: Sometimes, Rogue Anti-Spyware installs unwanted software to a victim’s PC without user’s knowledge and consent. This may lead to slower PC performance and stability, as well as more unwanted programs you can't remove.
