What is WinIFixer?

WinIFixer is yet another rogue scam: living proof that the makers of these scams are not the most original individuals. What does "WinIFixer" even mean? Whatever might be the case, WinIFixer is no different from any other rogue scam, most notably InfeStop and SpyAway, both of which were released by the same company (if it can be called that) - Pandora Software. This Pandora company has supposedly spent many years in the security industry, but have appeared on the net only in 2007. This should already be enough for BS alarms to go off, but to top it off, Pandora Software can be contacted only by filling out a form - no contact information is given. Either way, on to the parasite.

WinIFixer is your typical rogue, which infects the system by using trojans, such as Zlob or Vundo. This is done by exploiting browser security loopholes, which is why Internet Explorer users are the most common victims of such attacks. Once inside and active WinIFixer will flood the user with popups, fake system notifications and whatnot, seemingly with the good intention of "informing" him that he is infected and providing him with a solution at the same time. There are a few problems with this, obviously: first of all, the infection is most likely non-existent on the system if at all and WiniFixer can't fix anything, with the exception of the excess of money the user might have in his bank account.

WinIFixer's website is pretty useless as expected. You won't find any meaningful content there, only undeserved self-praise and fear-mongering. There is, of course, no contact information and everything looks way too similar to InfeStop.com. The domain is registered to someone who doesn't have a name, which is hardly the best way to create credibility.

WinIFixer is a scam and should therefore be avoided. Block winifixer.com using your HOSTS file.

Manual WinIFixer removal

Important Note: Although it is possible to manually remove WinIFixer, such activity can permanently damage your system if any mistakes are made in the process, as advanced spyware parasites are able to automatically repair themselves if not completely removed. Thus, manual spyware removal is recommended for experienced users only, such as IT specialists or highly qualified system administrators. For other users, we recommend using automatic spyware removal applications found on 2-viruses.com.

WinIFixer is classified as Rogue Anti-Spyware. After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake security messages, stating that your computer is infected with spyware and only WinIFixer can help you to remove it after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads WinIFixer trial version, it pretends to scan your computer and shows a grossly exaggerated amount of non-existent errors. Then, WinIFixer offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, WinIFixer not only does not fix the errors, but it takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer.

Some Rogue Anti-Spyware, such as WinIFixer, may offer users to buy it after the victim clicks on a banner or a pop-up while surfing the internet. Usually, a Trojan is installed to a victim’s computer after clicking on the advertisement. It then proceeds to download or even install WinIFixer, which is another way for Rogue Anti-Spyware to spread itself.

Most of rogue Anti-Spyware, such as WinIFixer, is nearly impossible to remove manually.

How to tell if your PC has been infected by a Rogue Anti-Spyware such as WinIFixer?

Numerous undesirable and annoying pop-ups: A typical Rogue Anti-Spyware parasite keeps track of your internet browsing habits, sending your browsing history data to remote servers, owned by third party companies that use this information to advertise their products via numerous pop-ups, toolbars, hijacked homepages and spam letters. All these undesirable advertising methods are used on the victims of Rogue Anti-Spyware.
Changed or new icons: Sometimes, Rogue Anti-Spyware installs unwanted software to a victim’s PC without user’s knowledge and consent. This may lead to slower PC performance and stability, as well as more unwanted programs you can't remove.

I downloaded spyware doctor ’set up’ into a USB Flash Disc Drive. I then inserted it into the computer that is currently controlled by “WinIFixer”. I am able to see the Spyware Doctor Setup on the lower part of the screen, but when I click on it, it does not run! Can you help?
