  1. Thank you for this information! You helped me remove this nasty virus in a quick and efficient manor! I’d love to get my hands on the authors of these viruses!

  2. Yes thanks!
Additionally a variant I saw set the hidden attribute on all files on the drive. From a cmd.exe console I corrected with the commands:
    CD \
    ATTRIB -H * /S /D

  3. ARGH. This thing is evil. I have no idea how I even picked it up. It isn’t like I the firewall and antivirus aren’t running all the time and aren’t completely up to date (ditto with the MSN XP updates). Plus I do crafts, pretty tame stuff to get hit with this (no, I did not download any rogue programs so I am extremely curious about how my box got it, but from your description it could have been a bunch of completely benign ways).

Anyhoo, thanks for the instructions. Hopefully I can get on the internet to try this once I get back home to my sick ‘puter. I have MalwareBytes but it needs to be updated, I am sure, since this sucker snuck in.

  4. lorrwill:
Free malwarebytes would not protect you from this parasite, as it is scanner only ( except if you turn on limited trial). I assume you got free one, as paid one takes care for updates itself. So, you should not blame it 🙂

  5. Grrr,I agree lorwill.I was hoping someone could help.My brother got this headache on my machine when I was not even here.I came home to this nightmare and my external hdd was still plugged in!I have a WD Elements 1 TB split in 2 partitions (ntfs,FAT32),mainly for my PS3 to recognize it.The FAT32 partition was open when I left before this attack, and I have followed all the instructions (THANKS 2- Viruses)and have removed all files and registry entries. Though it seems my partition on my external that was plugged in and open at the time is not showing ANY files! In “My Computer” it shows the size of partition and free space, but no files when I open it.It does not show any files when plugged into PS3 as well!
    Please Help.Thank You in advance.

  6. @Patrick
I had this very same problem with this virus and my WD external drive. It seems the virus sets the files and folders on the external drive as hidden. All you have to do is set the drive to show hidden files and away you go. I assume the virus can’t take hold of the external drive because there is no operating system to latch on to. Happy for any experts to advise differently

  7. I have another computer which is affected with this supposed Windows XP Repair (although on my computer it is named Windows XP Fix, same features though). I cannot find the Internet since I got it two days ago and I am not sure how to download the Spyware Doctor on it because I can’t find Internet Explorer. Any advice?
