How to remove VirusRemover2008?

July 9th, 2008

What is VirusRemover2008?

VirusRemover2008 is a new rogue anti-virus program – a fake piece of anti-viral software, which uses trojans, such as the infamous Zlob and Vundo, to enter the system. This scam is aimed at gullible users, since it relies on disinformation, which to more expierienced users would seem rather trivial.

Once inside and active, VirusRemover2008 will flood the user with popups and fake system notifications, supposedly to "inform" him of an infection or multiple infections present on the system. While this may indeed be the case, VirusRemover2008 has no ability to claim otherwise. The point of this misleading information is to create a reson for the user to purchase VirusRemover2008′s "licensed version".

The home of this scam, virusremover2008.com, is full of copy+pasted content, exaggerated claims and undeserved self-praise, what it lacks though is contact information and a legitimate payment system. The domain was created little more than a month ago, which is not something internet security companies usually do.

VirusRemover2008 is a scam and should be treated as such: do NOT download or buy it and block it’s homepage PCVirusRemover2008.com using your HOSTS file.

VirusRemover2008 is classified as Rogue Anti-Spyware. After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake security messages, stating that your computer is infected with spyware and only VirusRemover2008 can help you to remove it after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads VirusRemover2008 trial version, it pretends to scan your computer and shows a grossly exaggerated amount of non-existent errors. Then, VirusRemover2008 offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, VirusRemover2008 does not only fix the errors, but it also takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer.

Some Rogue Anti-Spyware, such as VirusRemover2008, may offer users to buy it after the victim clicks on a banner or a pop-up while surfing the internet. Usually, a Trojan is installed to a victim’s computer after clicking on the advertisement. It then proceeds to download or even install VirusRemover2008, which is another way for Rogue Anti-Spyware to spread itself.

Most of rogue Anti-Spyware, such as VirusRemover2008, is nearly impossible to remove manually.

How to tell if your PC has been infected by a Rogue Anti-Spyware such as VirusRemover2008?

Numerous undesirable and annoying pop-ups: A typical Rogue Anti-Spyware parasite keeps track of your internet browsing habits, sending your browsing history data to remote servers, owned by third party companies that use this information to advertise their products via numerous pop-ups, toolbars, hijacked homepages and spam letters. All these undesirable advertising methods are used on the victims of Rogue Anti-Spyware.
Changed or new icons: Sometimes, Rogue Anti-Spyware installs unwanted software to a victim’s PC without user’s knowledge and consent. This may lead to slower PC performance and stability, as well as more unwanted programs you can't remove.

Gullible, huh? This program downloaded and installed itself on my computer without me EVER visiting any unusual website or clicking any links. Also, none of the processes that this website or any other recommend stopping ever show as running in task manager. The virus has blocked my computer from installing any new antivirus programs so I can’t even try one of the recommended programs to remove it. Half the time, Windows doesn’t even start up right. I’m screwed unless I take it out to get fixed but it ticks me off that I have to pay for it when I have McAfee installed and it didn’t do it’s job. Like I said, it’s not as if I downloaded something or clicked on some weird link in an email or website. This virus sucks.

virusremover 2008 caused me a world of problems. it installed itself, and i got a nasty virus because of it. it took me forever to uninstall it, and to install some real anti-virus, because whoever designed this is very smart, and it would not allow me to go to any sites offering anti-virus. eeeeeeeeesh.

My laptop became infected with various forms of rogue anti-virus removal programs, one of them being VirusRemover2008. I shut it down lastnight and am now no longer able to logon to my laptop. I can get to the logon page when Windows is starting up, and after I enter my password it proceeds to logon and then before it finishes it logs me off my own laptop. How can I get back into my laptop to continue to try remove the programs. Please help me!

i have almost this same file on my computer %UserProfile%\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\s1jqw0bz.default\cookies.sqlite only mine has innhlcbm.default as the folder. A window pops up when i open firefox saying that cookies.sqlite is a tracking cookie but offers me no option to fix it. when i go to the file location i cannot delete the file, it says that i must have permission to do this action. however i do not seem to have virusremover2008. i searched this site for sqlite and this was the only result. are you able to tell me what program put this file on my computer? and if so, how to get rid of it?

This file is harmless in your case. Cookies are just a text information that allow websites to know when you visit them again. You could scan with superantispyware if you wish, it detects lots of tracking cookies, but more or less they are all harmless.
