How to remove VirusBye?

July 20th, 2009

What is VirusBye?

VirusBye is a rogue security tool aimed at the Korean market. Other than this insignificant detail, nothing else about it is different than most rogues: it enters the system using trojans, such as Vundo, or worms. VirusBye relies on misleading advertising to trick users into purchasing its so-called “full version”, which is no different than the trial.

Once inside, VirusBye uses several methods to deceive the user. Probably the most compelling of these are the simulated system scans, which produce highly exaggerated results. Often this is done by marking legitimate files as threats, and occasionally these files can be essential to the wellbeing of a Windows system. VirusBye also displays popups and fake system notifications to get much the same message through – “your system is infected, purchase VirusBye to take care of the infection”. All of this is untrue, and the only thing you will get buy keeping VirusBye is a significant drop in system performance.

VirusBye is a scam and should be treated as such: do NOT download or buy it and block its homepage (virusbye.net) using your HOSTS file.

VirusBye is classified as Rogue Anti-Spyware. After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake security messages, stating that your computer is infected with spyware and only VirusBye can help you to remove it after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads VirusBye trial version, it pretends to scan your computer and shows a grossly exaggerated amount of non-existent errors. Then, VirusBye offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, VirusBye does not only fix the errors, but it also takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer.

Some Rogue Anti-Spyware, such as VirusBye, may offer users to buy it after the victim clicks on a banner or a pop-up while surfing the internet. Usually, a Trojan is installed to a victim’s computer after clicking on the advertisement. It then proceeds to download or even install VirusBye, which is another way for Rogue Anti-Spyware to spread itself.

Most of rogue Anti-Spyware, such as VirusBye, is nearly impossible to remove manually.
