  1. I tried to install some anti-spyware and malware, but nothing seems to work because I download them, but I’m not able to open because the virus protector removed my desktop icons and bar, and also will not let me open the task manager. Even in safe mode, please help.

  2. I was able to end process of the pop of Vista Antivirus Pro 2010, using Windows Task Manager, tab process. After finding out the .exe file name that kept continues pop ups saying “you have a virus”, “download antivirus”, “your computer is infected”, etc of this Pro antivirus, it is name (Ev.exe), at least on my PC. It stop enough to get online and tried to download an Antispyware “Spyware Doctor,” and “AVG spyware/antivirus”, but this (Ev.exe) didn’t allow any downloads. I kept on ending process. I save manually the “Spyware Doctor” into a flash drive from other PC and installed it into the infected PC. I kept Task Manager open at all times. But now I have to buy Spyware Doctor. All the search of how to remove this virus took me to it, so isn’t it kind of we give you the virus and give you the doctor how to clean it with a fee of just $29.95 a month. Is it really going to clean it up, and stay of or do I have to buy more product in the long run to clean it in a few weeks, months, or day when I get more viruses, or anti viruses promos??????

  3. @Kris
i have exactly the same problem with virusprotector. Have you found a solution yet?
I cannot edit the registry in safe mode.
this malware is active in save mode and in save mode with network capability. Only in save mode with command prompt, it is not starting.

  4. I have this same problem, but I can’t even get the Task manager or anything else to pop up. I have tried Safe Mode, CTRL+SHIFT+ESC, CTRL+ESC+DEL, ALT+F4… nothing will get me out of the Virus Protector.
My laptop is currently useless! Help!

  5. This only works if you have made any restorepoints in windows. Go into save mode with prompt and type rstrui.exe. This will start the possibility to switch back to a former restorepoint

  6. Mark’s comment is correct: Safe mode with prompt, however for some reason the rstrui.exe command did not work for me. Instead type: control panel at the prompt. when your control panel comes up, click on folders at the top of the page, then the windows folder, then restore. rstrui.exe is in that folder. double click it to open system restore and select a date prior to your system being infected. follow the instructions. your computer will restart and come back on as good as new.

  7. I did what Alana had said to do with typing control panel: but my computer is pretty old so after I clicked on Folders, I did a search for rstrui.exe since my computer didn’t have windows listed as an option, it found the folder item for system restore on my C drive. Then I just opened system restore for a few weeks earlier and it seems to be working fine.

  8. Mark and Alana is correct. I had same problem with Virus Protector locking me out. Mine is good as new again after following Alana’s steps. Thanks for sharing!

  9. i have the Virus Protector on my computer and when i tried to use system restore, nothing happened. i chose a restore point and clicked next and then the hourglass showed up for about half a second and then nothing happened. I haven’t been able to use system restore on this computer in yers and i just got virus portector on accident yesterday and it seems that system restore is the only way to save my comp but since it doesn’t work i’m screwed. does anyone know a way to get rid of virus protector without system restore?

  10. My son got the VIRUS PROTECTOR bug into my system and I could do nothing it seemed to get rid of it. It took over everything and would no let me access anything to remove it. I looked on this site and saw Alana’s method to get rid of it. I followed those guidelines and went with— SAFE MODE WITH PROMPT—TYPE CONTROL PANEL–click FOLDERS–then WINDOWS FOLDERS–here I could not find “rstrui.exe” so I had to click– SYSTEM32–I found the– RSTRUI.EXE-under this folder. Double clicked to open SYSTEM RESTORE, restored to an earlier date and was I ever happy to say this worked perfectly and my VIRUS PROTECTOR went away. Thank you, thank you, thank you Alana for saving me tons of grief and some hard earned cash to fix this problem. Hope someone will have the same success as I did, VIRUS PROTECTOR is bad, bad , bad!!!

  11. @jason
my computer wouldn’t let me go to system restore. It keeps on telling me to restart the computer and run system restore again, but it always says the same thing. What should i do?

  12. i have just been able to remove this awful ‘virus protector’…i totally agree with evelyn…i strongly feel the disease and the medicine belongs to the same source…however, since i was using vista, i followed mart’s suggestions (thank u very much mart)…and as i restored to a previous point, my computer is working just fine now…but thanks to alana as well for being so simple in her description as if nothing big has happened…i was really frightened…and for all of u r really frightened as me…please dont be…just follow this blog…thanks to all who shared…

  13. I have found the file rstrui.exe but the computer says it doesnt have enough resources to open it. Any ideas where to go from here?

  14. Kathleen : Quite often parasites like that infect restore points as well. So you will need a good anti-spyware program with real time protection. Also, you can try remove it manually.

  15. Its now saying “System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart you computer, and then run system restore again”

  16. Hi! I have tried to use the system restore in safe mode but when I click on it, it says that system restore has been turned off and cannot be turned on in safe mode and that I have to re-open my pc in normal mode to run system restore again. What can I do?

  17. Adam : You got no system restore turned on, so you got no safe restore points even if you turn it on now. I would recommend using automatic remover tools Like Spyware doctor or malwarebytes. Also, you can use manual instructions.

  18. 24. Thanks a lot, friends. I followed the method, i.e. safe mode and command prompt then type rstrui.exe for a system restore… my computer is good now… thanks.

  25. Same problem computer complete blocked, task manager will not start.
Start the computer whit ERD commander in the cd-rom player.
I was able to start a system restore!!!!
Computer works again. THX so much for sharing information.
I really don’t understand why people build something like this.
    The World is sick

  26. Most antivirus programs have boot time virus scanning. Try to run your antivirus program from safe mode command and turn on boot time scanning. You’d have to find the main exe name of your antivirus program and then run that. You can look for that exe through the ‘control panel/folder’ method mentioned above.

  27. i have done a complete restore, run malware–rebooted—everything—please please help

  28. Drac310 : Do a full system scan with Spyware Doctor (Update before scan). If it does not remove virus fully – contact pctools support.

  29. @Gretchen

push F8 when you turn on your computer then select
“safe mode with prompt” then type rstrui.exe. after the blinking arrow then wait for restore point to appear on your computer. my computer is now working great!!!!!! set your restore point at a different date. it really works

  39. @Mart, @Alana: Working on a friends older HP Laptop running XP32bit same problem as Tina & Doug–> ‘I tried going to safe mode with prompt and when I hit it , it just shows a big list and there is no where to type anything. The lines look like “multiple(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\Drivers\Mup.sys” ‘

  42. Terry :@Alana When I get to the part of the restore point, it has the local disk (C:), and when I click next it says “the disk Local Disk (C:) has errors.” do u know what to do?

  43. Hi everyone!
    this way works for me!
    1. run Windows in safe mode with Command Prompt
    2. in the command prompt go to c:windows\ type explorer.exe and “enter” (explorer opens!)
    3. in another pc, download “malwarebytes” (or other anti-malware program), and “hijackthis”
    4. plug a external disk with the programs above to the infect pc and run them

    Hope it helps

  44. i tried this and it worked great
click f8 when starting computer.start windows in safe mode with command prompt
if using windows xp tyre in %windir%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
this should launch your pc to system restore-then go back to previuos point and restore
    should be ok now
    good luck

  47. Thank You Thank You… after hourrrrrssssss trying to get this Virus Protector out of my system, after following Alanas steps, i FINALLY got rid of it!

  48. Hi!

Today I was using my cousins PC and suddently this virus came in while watching youtube videos.

I could tell it was a virus instantly but my cousin believed it had to be some new antivirus just he didnt remember when he installed lol

The problem was that not even the task manager could remain open for long before it was closed, but at least I could see the name of the program “protector.exe” and luckily the file explorer was ok so I searched for the exe and since i could not close it because it runs from start, all i could do was change the permisions in order to forbid all users from reading and executing, then I restarted and after reboot I just errased the file (since it didnot started this time)

Was gonna run clam AV from a linux live cd but the above was a fastest solution

but seriously windows security sucks big time If you ever get tired of this give linux a try, at least it works for a student like me (using Chakra linux)

Sorry for my lame english LOL

  49. i was just playing a game one day and then these anoying pop ups kept on coming up and i cant stop it please i beg of you all that read this please reply p.s its still happening
