How to remove VirProtect ?

January 14th, 2008

What is VirProtect ?

VirProtect, another rogue threat to surface the internet community in January 2008, is a clone of the notorious VirusProtect Pro. This parasite, as most rogues do, tries to mislead users by harassing them with security notifications, at first. If they swallow the bait and install the program, VirProtect offers a bogus threat scan, and displays a falsified error report as soon as the "scan" is finished. If you expect VirProtect to remove all the threats it lists, you’re in for a surprise: not only are the errors completely imaginary, you must purchase the "full" VirProtect version if you want them "removed". Some deal for a whopping $30 (and it’s AFTER several discount offers, having dropped the price from $50).

If you are still unsure as to whether VirProtect is a complete scam, we suggest you to check out these facts: as most latest rogue anti-spyware parasites claim, VirProtect is owned by VirusProtect, inc. that is based in Riga, Latvia. However, as one looks up the registration info for their website, new perspective into what this company represents, spring up: virprotect.com is registered on October 23, 2007 in Australia (contrary to VirProtect’s claims to be in business since 2000), and is based in Netherlands. Such shifty tactics in domain registration are certainly not typical to respectable companies.

Our piece of advice is this: avoid VirProtect at all costs. If you have been infected, use our manual removal instructions or download our automatic spyware removal tool to get rid of it for you.

VirProtect is classified as Rogue Anti-Spyware. After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake security messages, stating that your computer is infected with spyware and only VirProtect can help you to remove it after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads VirProtect trial version, it pretends to scan your computer and shows a grossly exaggerated amount of non-existent errors. Then, VirProtect offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, VirProtect does not only fix the errors, but it also takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer.

Some Rogue Anti-Spyware, such as VirProtect , may offer users to buy it after the victim clicks on a banner or a pop-up while surfing the internet. Usually, a Trojan is installed to a victim’s computer after clicking on the advertisement. It then proceeds to download or even install VirProtect , which is another way for Rogue Anti-Spyware to spread itself.

Most of rogue Anti-Spyware, such as VirProtect , is nearly impossible to remove manually.

How to tell if your PC has been infected by a Rogue Anti-Spyware such as VirProtect ?

Numerous undesirable and annoying pop-ups: A typical Rogue Anti-Spyware parasite keeps track of your internet browsing habits, sending your browsing history data to remote servers, owned by third party companies that use this information to advertise their products via numerous pop-ups, toolbars, hijacked homepages and spam letters. All these undesirable advertising methods are used on the victims of Rogue Anti-Spyware.
Changed or new icons: Sometimes, Rogue Anti-Spyware installs unwanted software to a victim’s PC without user’s knowledge and consent. This may lead to slower PC performance and stability, as well as more unwanted programs you can't remove.

VirProtect has a wonerful NEW scam!! it seems that they are going after college students. My machine was infected by this trash program while applying for a student loan. I was told that the application required an ActiveX to view it,. When I downloaded the ActiveX my PC was infected, and the application for the loan was not the next thing I saw. I have spent countless hours trying to find all of the .dll files and registry keys. Thank you for listing all of them as this will help me get rid of this once and for all.
So college students beware. If you apply for a loan, and the application requires an ActiveX to view it, CALL THE LOAN COMPANY!! DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING UNTIL THEY SAY IT IS REQUIRED!!
