How to remove Trace Sweeper?

August 6th, 2008

What is Trace Sweeper?

Trace Sweeper is a brand new rogue security program, only instead of masquerading as an anti-spyware program, this parasite pretends to be an application that will help you dispose of any traces you might leave behind that hint to your online activity. TraceSweeper usually makes it’s way to the system by using trojans, such as Zlob or Vundo, but can also be manually downloaded and installed from trace-sweeper.com – the rogue’s homepage.

Once inside and active, Trace Sweeper will attempt to convince the user that his privacy is in danger and that he is therefore in need of a program to solve this problem. Trace Sweeper does this by displaying popups and fake system notifications with misleading messages and falsified system scan reports. All these means of illicit advertising link to the website where you can purchase TraceSweeper (which is not a good idea, since it’s a totally fake program).

Trace-Sweeper.com, the home of this scam, speaks for itself. In addition to the poor design, there is no useful information whatsoever and no contact details (unless an email adress is enough for you). The website was created merely a month ago, which can be considered anything except usual security company practice.

Trace Sweeper is a scam and should be treated as such: do NOT download or buy it and block trace-sweeper.com using your HOSTS file.

After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake security messages, stating that your computer is infected with spyware and only Trace Sweeper can help you to remove it after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads Trace Sweeper trial version, it pretends to scan your computer and shows a grossly exaggerated amount of non-existent errors. Then, Trace Sweeper offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, Trace Sweeper does not only fix the errors, but it also takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer.

It then proceeds to download or even install Trace Sweeper, which is another way for Rogue Anti-Spyware to spread itself.

Most of rogue Anti-Spyware, such as Trace Sweeper, is nearly impossible to remove manually.
