I ran into a particularly devious version of the virus: it disabled safe mode and disabled task manager. The only program that still functioned was IE (because that was how the software connected with the internet to deliver a credit card ransom).

In order to kill it, I browsed my hard drive using IE. There were some new folders created in the root directory and in program files - changing the names of the executables there made the program go away on a restart). Now my antivirus programs aren't finding any trace of it.

Do a followup scan with Spyware Doctor, Kaz. Just in case... no anti-spyware program is 100%. I would consider using some antivirus program continuously in the future.

total protection virus.i actually got rid of it after 7 hours...it only takes 5 minutes to kill when you know how. you can start windows in safe mode when you turn pc on... by pressing 1 of the f keys, then right click on the time to get on task manager and on processes stop the number, then run malwarebytes, it detected it n destroyed it for me.good luck, nasty horrid virus the worst ive ever had, thought my pc was a gonner.
