How to remove RegSort?

December 19th, 2007

What is RegSort?

RegSort is another one of those rogue anti-spyware programs (a rogue registry cleaner, to be more precise) we all know and love. This particular variant involves a seemingly benign program, which masquerades as a registry cleaner, but is really a scam just like all the other rogue anti-spyware scams on the net today.

RegSort must be downloaded and installed manually if you want to "enjoy" its "functions". When active, the program allows you to perform a registry scan, which produces a falsified report abundant in errors. While these (or other) errors may or may not exist, RegSort is sure to try to intimidate you anyway and once it assumes you are scared, you are asked to pay for the full version in order to fix the errors. The full version is, of course, a mile-or-two away from being functional.

RegSort’s homepage only fuels your fears by telling you how registry errors are to blame for computer crashes, and, possibly, the latest Britney Spears record. Yet another thing you are led to believe by all the trivial content there is that RegSort will protect you from there hardships, if only you pay some money. The strangest section of regsort.com has to be the FAQ, which answers three questions: "What is Spyware?", "What is Adware?" and "What is Thiefware?", none of which seem particularly fit for a website that promotes a registry cleaner and not a spyware removal tool, but I guess these things happen when you copy+paste everything. There is, of course, no contact information, so I wouldn’t trust that "money back guarantee" too much…

Do NOT download or buy RegSort, unless you are tired of money. Block regsort.com using your HOSTS file.

Manual RegSort removal

Important Note: Although it is possible to manually remove RegSort, such activity can permanently damage your system if any mistakes are made in the process, as advanced spyware parasites are able to automatically repair themselves if not completely removed. Thus, manual spyware removal is recommended for experienced users only, such as IT specialists or highly qualified system administrators. For other users, we recommend using automatic spyware removal applications found on 2-viruses.com.

RegSort is classified as Rogue Anti-Spyware. After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake security messages, stating that your computer is infected with spyware and only RegSort can help you to remove it after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads RegSort trial version, it pretends to scan your computer and shows a grossly exaggerated amount of non-existent errors. Then, RegSort offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, RegSort does not only fix the errors, but it also takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer.

Some Rogue Anti-Spyware, such as RegSort, may offer users to buy it after the victim clicks on a banner or a pop-up while surfing the internet. Usually, a Trojan is installed to a victim’s computer after clicking on the advertisement. It then proceeds to download or even install RegSort, which is another way for Rogue Anti-Spyware to spread itself.

Most of rogue Anti-Spyware, such as RegSort, is nearly impossible to remove manually.

How to tell if your PC has been infected by a Rogue Anti-Spyware such as RegSort?

Numerous undesirable and annoying pop-ups: A typical Rogue Anti-Spyware parasite keeps track of your internet browsing habits, sending your browsing history data to remote servers, owned by third party companies that use this information to advertise their products via numerous pop-ups, toolbars, hijacked homepages and spam letters. All these undesirable advertising methods are used on the victims of Rogue Anti-Spyware.
Changed or new icons: Sometimes, Rogue Anti-Spyware installs unwanted software to a victim’s PC without user’s knowledge and consent. This may lead to slower PC performance and stability, as well as more unwanted programs you can't remove.
