How to remove RegistryCleanFix?

December 17th, 2007

What is RegistryCleanFix?

RegistryCleanFix is a rogue anti-spyware program, or, more precisely, a rogue registry cleaner. It is supposedly the best tool on the market, but is actually neither "the best" nor a tool. This a scam just as so many others of the same kind.

RegistryCleanFix makes its way to your computer through web-browser security holes or by way of manual download and installation. When active, RegistryCleanFix allows you to scan the registry for errors. While your registry may have real errors, this program is not one to know, instead, it falsifies the report so it contains a lot of errors. There "errors" can only be removed by purchasing the full version, which is a fake.

It is relatively easy to tell that RegistryCleanFix is a scam upon looking at its website, which provides the user with a few give-aways of the programs nature. One of these would be the lack of contact information – no legitimate company would fail to provide it. Other than that, the content is just really poorly written.

RegistryCleanFix is a scam and should be treated as such: do not download or buy it and block registrycleanfix.com using your hosts file.

RegistryCleanFix is classified as Rogue Anti-Spyware. After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake security messages, stating that your computer is infected with spyware and only RegistryCleanFix can help you to remove it after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads RegistryCleanFix trial version, it pretends to scan your computer and shows a grossly exaggerated amount of non-existent errors. Then, RegistryCleanFix offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, RegistryCleanFix does not only fix the errors, but it also takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer.

Some Rogue Anti-Spyware, such as RegistryCleanFix, may offer users to buy it after the victim clicks on a banner or a pop-up while surfing the internet. Usually, a Trojan is installed to a victim’s computer after clicking on the advertisement. It then proceeds to download or even install RegistryCleanFix, which is another way for Rogue Anti-Spyware to spread itself.

Most of rogue Anti-Spyware, such as RegistryCleanFix, is nearly impossible to remove manually.

How to tell if your PC has been infected by a Rogue Anti-Spyware such as RegistryCleanFix?

Numerous undesirable and annoying pop-ups: A typical Rogue Anti-Spyware parasite keeps track of your internet browsing habits, sending your browsing history data to remote servers, owned by third party companies that use this information to advertise their products via numerous pop-ups, toolbars, hijacked homepages and spam letters. All these undesirable advertising methods are used on the victims of Rogue Anti-Spyware.
Changed or new icons: Sometimes, Rogue Anti-Spyware installs unwanted software to a victim’s PC without user’s knowledge and consent. This may lead to slower PC performance and stability, as well as more unwanted programs you can't remove.

I have been a victim of this scam and have paid a full licence for what appears to be a duffer. Luckily I have Symantecs Norton Internet Security 2008 suite on my PC which recognised that this was a “misleading application” and removed it automatically from my machine. Although a winged an email off to the company I have received nothing tangible to work from so appears as though I have to kiss this one goodbye. SO BEWARE,, and ensure that you have good internet security installed othewise you could be in trouble
