How to remove ProtectDefender?

January 20th, 2010

What is ProtectDefender?

ProtectDefender (also can be called Protect Defender) is a rogue anti-spyware program which aggressively tries to mislead its victims into registering so called “full” version. Such version does not even exist because ProtectDefender hails from WiniSoft group of malwares. All its members (the latest of them are known to be ArmorDefender and DefendAPc) usually seek to rip PC users off by using the same malicious tactics involving exaggerated scan results and fake system scanners. However, it must be mentioned that ProtectDefender has a new design, so be aware.

ProtectDedefender displays fake system scanners when installed and after the scanning reports a great variety of infections. Important to realize that all these “infections” are mostly imaginary and harmless files which have nothing to do with your computer. Besides, ProtectDefender produces numerous alerts and warnings, for example:

Attention! DANGER!

ProtectDefender detected that This PC is NOT PROTECTED. Currently installed malware applications will cause:

Annoying advertisements wasting your traffic.
Slow page downloading speed. Web browser does not work properly.
Cyber thieves get access to credit card.
Criminals will steal your personal data and photos.
Hackers will get an access to email box, hosting and Internet services. They will use your computer and IP address for illegal purposes.

Register ProtectDefender to activate the protection from malware attacks. Click “Protect” to register software and run protection.

Do not fall into any of them! They notify only about nonexistent problems and seek to scam trustful users’ money. Remember, if it happens for you to get notifications from ProtectDefender, you have definitely downloaded some kind of fake video codec or bogus flash update for watching something online. These updates usually are Trojans viruses that download ProtectDefender and configure it to start automatically.

Don’t pay for ProtectDedender. Use a reputable anti-spyware program to scan your computer and delete ProtectDefender. Also read a removal guide written below to see instructions how it can be eliminated manually.

ProtectDefender is classified as Rogue Anti-Spyware. After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake security messages, stating that your computer is infected with spyware and only ProtectDefender can help you to remove it after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads ProtectDefender trial version, it pretends to scan your computer and shows a grossly exaggerated amount of non-existent errors. Then, ProtectDefender offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, ProtectDefender does not only fix the errors, but it also takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer.

Some Rogue Anti-Spyware, such as ProtectDefender, may offer users to buy it after the victim clicks on a banner or a pop-up while surfing the internet. Usually, a Trojan is installed to a victim’s computer after clicking on the advertisement. It then proceeds to download or even install ProtectDefender, which is another way for Rogue Anti-Spyware to spread itself.

Most of rogue Anti-Spyware, such as ProtectDefender, is nearly impossible to remove manually.

How to tell if your PC has been infected by a Rogue Anti-Spyware such as ProtectDefender?

Numerous undesirable and annoying pop-ups: A typical Rogue Anti-Spyware parasite keeps track of your internet browsing habits, sending your browsing history data to remote servers, owned by third party companies that use this information to advertise their products via numerous pop-ups, toolbars, hijacked homepages and spam letters. All these undesirable advertising methods are used on the victims of Rogue Anti-Spyware.
Changed or new icons: Sometimes, Rogue Anti-Spyware installs unwanted software to a victim’s PC without user’s knowledge and consent. This may lead to slower PC performance and stability, as well as more unwanted programs you can't remove.
