How to remove PrivacyControl?
What is PrivacyControl?
PrivacyControl is one of the first rogue anti-spyware scams of 2008. Released on January 4, this program masquerades as a tool, which is used to destroy any and all trace of internet activity, therefore, if you have a habit of porn-surfing and don’t want anyone to find out, PrivacyControl is just for you…Or is it? All self-praise aside, this program is just another scam, not unlike any other of the same kind: it uses scare tactics to intimidate you into buying the fake full version.
PrivacyControl must be manually downloaded and installed in order to work, therefore it’s not an infection per se. When active, it allows you to scan your computer for "sensitive information", then falsifies the report so that it would say "you have an X amount of history files on your computer" and in order to remove them, you have to buy the full version, which, of course, doesn’t work.
I never really understood the idea behind these privacy-securing programs: are you supposed to be so terribly afraid of your history files, that you will buy the program without asking questions? PrivacyControl’s homepage answers my question. Apparently, "a person can look at every single website you’ve ever visited, every email you’ve ever sent or received, and every movie or music file you’ve ever watched or downloaded." Well, I suppose, if that’s the case, then it’s a very serious issue. PrivacyControl’s homepage has a lot of such exaggerations and every single one of them was copied from other rogue anti-spyware programs. You will find no contact information, as is usually the case with these scams. It is also the most obvious indication that you are being fooled.
PrivacyControl is a scam and should be treated as such: do NOT download or buy it and block privacycontrol.com using your HOSTS file.

PrivacyControl is classified as Rogue Anti-Spyware. After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake security messages, stating that your computer is infected with spyware and only PrivacyControl can help you to remove it after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads PrivacyControl trial version, it pretends to scan your computer and shows a grossly exaggerated amount of non-existent errors. Then, PrivacyControl offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, PrivacyControl does not only fix the errors, but it also takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer.
Some Rogue Anti-Spyware, such as PrivacyControl, may offer users to buy it after the victim clicks on a banner or a pop-up while surfing the internet. Usually, a Trojan is installed to a victim’s computer after clicking on the advertisement. It then proceeds to download or even install PrivacyControl, which is another way for Rogue Anti-Spyware to spread itself.
Most of rogue Anti-Spyware, such as PrivacyControl, is nearly impossible to remove manually.
