Neurowise - How to remove

Neurowise

Neurowise sounds like the name of some medicine science issue or even disease and there is some truth in it – it is a disease for your computer. But it’s not a severe one, do not get scared. It’s not a powerful virus or trojan, it’s just an adware, that is also listed as a PUP (potentially unwanted program). Once installed, Neurowise will display various advertisements on your web browser when browsing the Internet. It works as an add-on and can be added to all most popular web browsers, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer. Those ads can be show in all kinds of forms, including in-text, banner ads, pop-up and pop-under ads. We do not recommend clicking on those ads because if you do so, you will be immediately redirected to the third party website that may be infected by cyber criminals and do damage to your operating system. Neurowise is an ad-supported system that gets sponsored by the third parties. It generates web traffic to their partners’ websites and collects sales leads to make money. You should know that almost all those partners are cyber criminals, distributors of malicious software. Neurowise will also collect your personal information, such as IP address, browsing history, search queries or top visited sites and transfer it to the mentioned third parties. They will adjust their ads according to your browsing habits and make them more relevant to you. If you noticed this adware operating on your computer, you should not keep it on your system.

Like most of other adware, Neurowise is distributed bundled with freebies. I.e. when you download and install some software for free, there is a chance that this adware will get installed alongside. To avoid this happening, pay a close attention to the installation wizard of software downloaded from suspicious looking websites. Do not skip any steps, read all terms and conditions. Opt out for a custom or advanced install mode and check all advanced settings to make sure you are aware of what you are installing. If it is too late and your computer is already infected, we highly recommend scanning it with a trustworthy anti- malware, such as Spyhunter or malwarebytes. It will detect and remove Neurowise automatically. To complete the same action manually, you need to follow Neurowise removal instructions, given below.

How to uninstall Neurowise

Using Control Panel to remove the main Neurowise components and installers

  1. Go to Control Panel. On Windows XP/Vista/7 open Start -> Control Panel , Add/Remove Programs or Uninstall . On Windows 8 enter Control Panel in the search box, then look for Uninstall a program. You may need to confirm that you are the administrator on this PC, in both cases.
  2. Look for Neurowise and /or similar looking items on the list of programs. By default, I recommend removing Yontoo, WebCake, anything “savings” or “coupon” related. Scanning with Anti-Malware programs like Spyhunter or Stopzilla might give a good idea of what programs you should remove from there as well.
  3. Close Control Panel.

Removing Neurowise from Internet Explorer

  1. Press on the Wench icon->Manage Add-ons.
  2. Go through Toolbars and extensions. Remove everything related to Neurowise and items you do not know that are made not by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Oracle or Adobe.
  3. Close the Options.

Removing Neurowise from Firefox

  1. Enter about:addons in URL field.
  2. Go through Extensions and Addons list, remove everything Neurowise related and items you do not recognise. If you do not know the extension and it is not made by Mozilla, Google, Microsoft, Oracle or Adobe probably you do not need it.
  3. Optionally, reset Firefox: go to Firefox ->Help (Help in menu for OSX users) -> Troubleshooting Information. Then Reset Firefox.

Removing Neurowise from Chrome

  1. Enter chrome://extensions in url field.
  2. Go through extensions list and remove programs you do not need, especially similar to Neurowise. If unsure, you can disable them temporarily.
  3. Restart Chrome.
  4. Optionally, you can enter chrome://settings in URL bar, press Advanced settings, scroll to the bottom of the list and press Reset browser settings.

  1. Dear author,
I am currently trying to complete the actions to delete my neurowise, as I (unfortunately) have it on my laptop I just received for my 14th birthday less than a week ago, I have found the file that includes neurowise, and am currently trying to delete, but whenever I do, it simply says “folder is in use. Please close folder and try again.” I also tried to have My McAfee scan for it, but it wouldn’t even show it scanned, and simply say that no issues were detected. I also performed the steps you stated to deleting it from Internet Explorer. I HAVE found neurowise in my add-ons, but whenever I click “disable” nothing happens, almost like the button action is defective. I’ll right click on it and then click disable, but it will do nothing, and I’m starting to think they took precautionary measures in trying to close any possible loophole to deleting them. It’s really frustrating, and they keep sending me all of these virus pop-ups, one I even found to be believable as it acted like a Microsoft page, telling me to call some designated number to fix my computer of spyware/adware. I had my McAfee run a full scan of all my files, and it issued no threats, so I simply deleted the page. Is there some other way I can try to delete neurowise from my laptop, so I can no longer be flooded by these inexcusable pop-ups?

    thank you,

  2. Hello, Ethan, we recommend you to download other anti-malware, for example SpyHunter and scan your computer with it. McAfee may be unable to detect this particular infection.
