How to remove MalwareCore?

January 31st, 2008

What is MalwareCore?

MalwareCore is a new rogue anti-spyware program (as if we didn’t have enough of them already). It is yet another self-proclaimed award-winning, spyware-bashing and, let’s not forget, nearly free tool. It is also one that fails every step of the way and costs more than Lindsay Lohan on an off-day. MalwareCore, being the smart bugger that it is, uses Trojans to install itself and then proceeds to annoy the living hell out of you with it’s endless nagging. Come to think of it, MalwareCore may remind you of your wife.

Once inside and active on the unsuspecting victim’s computer, MalwareCore floods the screen with popups, fake system notifications and whatnot, to inform him of an infection. Albeit this infection is likely non-existent, the scare tactics often work – the user is convinced that he is infected. Then he is presented with a solution – MalwareCore – and if he’s watched the Lord of the Rings one too many times, he’ll likely believe that such systematic manifestations of luck are highly probable. The poor guy then tries to remove the "threats", but, alas, to no avail.

I’ve seen MalwareCore.com before, only then it was named something else and something else before that. Just as expected from the great MalwareCore, it copied the content from elsewhere. This website leads you to believe a lot of things, but the two most important aspects of the written content are engineering the fear of spyware by exaggerating it’s capabilities (e.g. Supposedly, if you chat online, it is likely that you are infected) and praising MalwareCore (e.g. Christina O. had tried a dozen spyware removal programs, and MalwareCore was the best one (I’m afraid to ask what others she tried;])). There is no contact information provided, which is commonplace as well as necessary with these scams and the domain is registered to someone who refused to leave a name.

MalwareCore is a scam and should be treated as such: do NOT download or buy it and block MalwareCore.com using your HOSTS file.

Manual MalwareCore removal

Important Note: Although it is possible to manually remove MalwareCore, such activity can permanently damage your system if any mistakes are made in the process, as advanced spyware parasites are able to automatically repair themselves if not completely removed. Thus, manual spyware removal is recommended for experienced users only, such as IT specialists or highly qualified system administrators. For other users, we recommend using Spyware Doctor or other malware and spyware removal applications found on 2-viruses.com.

MalwareCore is classified as Rogue Anti-Spyware. After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake security messages, stating that your computer is infected with spyware and only MalwareCore can help you to remove it after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads MalwareCore trial version, it pretends to scan your computer and shows a grossly exaggerated amount of non-existent errors. Then, MalwareCore offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, MalwareCore does not only fix the errors, but it also takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer.

Some Rogue Anti-Spyware, such as MalwareCore, may offer users to buy it after the victim clicks on a banner or a pop-up while surfing the internet. Usually, a Trojan is installed to a victim’s computer after clicking on the advertisement. It then proceeds to download or even install MalwareCore, which is another way for Rogue Anti-Spyware to spread itself.

Most of rogue Anti-Spyware, such as MalwareCore, is nearly impossible to remove manually.

How to tell if your PC has been infected by a Rogue Anti-Spyware such as MalwareCore?

Numerous undesirable and annoying pop-ups: A typical Rogue Anti-Spyware parasite keeps track of your internet browsing habits, sending your browsing history data to remote servers, owned by third party companies that use this information to advertise their products via numerous pop-ups, toolbars, hijacked homepages and spam letters. All these undesirable advertising methods are used on the victims of Rogue Anti-Spyware.
Changed or new icons: Sometimes, Rogue Anti-Spyware installs unwanted software to a victim’s PC without user’s knowledge and consent. This may lead to slower PC performance and stability, as well as more unwanted programs you can't remove.

Spybot detects “malwarecore and “fixes”it only for it to return shortly thereafter.

I sought those files that were associated with the infection as defined on the 2-virus.com website, however, I was unable to locate the files.

Spybot is crap I would not use on my PC. Seriously, it updated too slowly. Many will disagree, but I stand for my position.
You have problems on finding files because they change file names in trojans they use. Try our scanner or Malwarebytes anti-malware. http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
