How to remove GuardCenter?

December 4th, 2007

What is GuardCenter?

December 3, 2007, a new day with a new rogue anti-spyware program. This time it’s GuardCenter. As the name suggests, GuardCenter will "secure" your PC from all that is bad (spyware in particular). Rarely have anyone’s claims been further from the truth: GuardCenter is a scam not unlike any other scam of the same nature.

You have to download and install GuardCenter manually in order to "enjoy" its "features", making it not an actual infection but more of a simple scam. Once active, GuardCenter allows the user to make a scan of the system, then falsifies the report, filling it with non-existent threats. These threats can supposedly only be removed with the full version of the program, which costs $49.95 (a rather big donation to the wrong people, I think you’ll agree). This "full version" is not functional whatsoever, so the user ends up with a bogus program and a lack of money.

It is arguably difficult to be fooled by this particular rogue security program (at least for an English speaker), since its website makes up for having insufficient content, by spicing what little content there is with grammar mistakes. These mistakes run quite rampant, really, with such mind boggling questions for the self as "WHY IS GUARD CENTER?", which raises a lot of other questions: did they mean "What is guard center?", "why guard center?" or perhaps "why is guard a center?". There are also some ludicrous statements in the vein of "your computer is infected if you’ve downloaded music or software from the net" and there is the omnipresent lack of contact information as well. Possibly the strangest thing in the whole website are the two buttons  ("help desk" and "contacts") right next to each other leading to the same page.

GuardCenter is a scam and should be treated as such: do not download or buy it, if you have it – remove it and block guard-center.com in your host files.

Important Note: Although it is possible to manually remove GuardCenter, such activity can permanently damage your system if any mistakes are made in the process, as advanced spyware parasites are able to automatically repair themselves if not completely removed. GuardCenter is classified as Rogue Anti-Spyware. After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake security messages, stating that your computer is infected with spyware and only GuardCenter can help you to remove it after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads GuardCenter trial version, it pretends to scan your computer and shows a grossly exaggerated amount of non-existent errors. Then, GuardCenter offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, GuardCenter does not only fix the errors, but it also takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer.

Some Rogue Anti-Spyware, such as GuardCenter, may offer users to buy it after the victim clicks on a banner or a pop-up while surfing the internet. Usually, a Trojan is installed to a victim’s computer after clicking on the advertisement. It then proceeds to download or even install GuardCenter, which is another way for Rogue Anti-Spyware to spread itself.

Most of rogue Anti-Spyware, such as GuardCenter, is nearly impossible to remove manually.

How to tell if your PC has been infected by a Rogue Anti-Spyware such as GuardCenter?

Numerous undesirable and annoying pop-ups: A typical Rogue Anti-Spyware parasite keeps track of your internet browsing habits, sending your browsing history data to remote servers, owned by third party companies that use this information to advertise their products via numerous pop-ups, toolbars, hijacked homepages and spam letters. All these undesirable advertising methods are used on the victims of Rogue Anti-Spyware.
Changed or new icons: Sometimes, Rogue Anti-Spyware installs unwanted software to a victim’s PC without user’s knowledge and consent. This may lead to slower PC performance and stability, as well as more unwanted programs you can't remove.
