How to remove DriveDefender?

What is DriveDefender?

DriveDefender is yet another rogue anti-spyware program, with a weird concept: it is, essentially, meant to get rid of any evidence of your porn-surfing activities, or, possibly, something even spicier than that. However bizarre this goal may seem, DriveDefender doesn’t even do that – it is as much a scam as any other of these programs and serves only one purpose – to make money for its creators.

DriveDefender typically makes its way to your computer via Trojans such as Zlob or by manual download and installation. When active, DriveDefender bombards you with intimidating pop-ups and system notifications about various threats to your privacy and whatnot. None of these threats necessarily exist, but the scare tactics work, as practice has shown, and users buy the full version, which is supposedly able to dispose of the threats.

DriveDefender’s homepage is rather humble: there isn’t a lot of content and the little that there is doesn’t seem to be meaningful at all: it is all written for the purpose of convincing people to buy. There is the usual lack of logic here and there and there are a few ludicrous claims, but what really gives away the fact that DriveDefender is a scam, is the fact that you won’t find any contact information aside from a form that you can fill out: it is just not something a respectable and legitimate company would do.

Do not download or buy DriveDefender, if you have it – remove it and block drivedefender.com using your HOSTS file.

DriveDefender is classified as Rogue Anti-Spyware. After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake security messages, stating that your computer is infected with spyware and only DriveDefender can help you to remove it after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads DriveDefender trial version, it pretends to scan your computer and shows a grossly exaggerated amount of non-existent errors. Then, DriveDefender offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, DriveDefender does not only fix the errors, but it also takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer.

Some Rogue Anti-Spyware, such as DriveDefender, may offer users to buy it after the victim clicks on a banner or a pop-up while surfing the internet. Usually, a Trojan is installed to a victim’s computer after clicking on the advertisement. It then proceeds to download or even install DriveDefender, which is another way for Rogue Anti-Spyware to spread itself.

Most of rogue Anti-Spyware, such as DriveDefender, is nearly impossible to remove manually.

How to tell if your PC has been infected by a Rogue Anti-Spyware such as DriveDefender?

Numerous undesirable and annoying pop-ups: A typical Rogue Anti-Spyware parasite keeps track of your internet browsing habits, sending your browsing history data to remote servers, owned by third party companies that use this information to advertise their products via numerous pop-ups, toolbars, hijacked homepages and spam letters. All these undesirable advertising methods are used on the victims of Rogue Anti-Spyware.
Changed or new icons: Sometimes, Rogue Anti-Spyware installs unwanted software to a victim’s PC without user’s knowledge and consent. This may lead to slower PC performance and stability, as well as more unwanted programs you can't remove.
