How to remove ContraVirus?

June 13th, 2007

What is ContraVirus?

Although ContraVirus (ContraVirus Pro, ContraVirus v2.0) has been released a few years ago (04-10-2005) it is considered to be one of the most technologically advanced fake spyware removal tools. It is one of the multitudes of rogue anti-spyware parasites that you can be infected with while browsing the internet. Usually, this threat gets installed to your computer after a Trojan infection or when your browser security fails. After infection, ContraVirus promptly starts to display fake security warnings and tries to scare you into buying it in order to fix the non-existent or greatly exaggerated errors. These fake error messages will guide you to the domain contraviruspro.com, where you‘ll be offered to purchase the latest version of ContraVirus. Stay clear from these offers and get a real removal tool like Spyware Terminator, Windows defender or Spyware doctor instead. ContraVirus Pro will not remove the errors; moreover it may install additional spyware to your system. If possible, remove it immediately after detection manually or automatically.
Preventing your system from ContraVirus and Contra Virus Pro together with similar Rogue Anti-Spyware parasites is easier than to get rid of them:
1. Make sure your version of Windows is updated
2. Try not to download “free” products from sites you do not know. Downloading free products is the number one cause for spyware infections such as ContraVirus.
3. Drive by Downloads is the latest technique to infect people’s computers. You may stop it by locking down your browser.
4. Avoid "free" codecs to view movies on the net from unreliable sources.
The domain(s) related to this infection include contraviruspro.com ( 69.50.168.43 ), which is located in California,  InterCage ISP.

Manual ContraVirus removal

Important Note: Although it is possible to manually remove ContraVirus, such activity can permanently damage your system if any mistakes are made in the process, as advanced spyware parasites are able to automatically repair themselves if not completely removed. Thus, manual spyware removal is recommended for experienced users only, such as IT specialists or highly qualified system administrators. For other users, we recommend using Spyware Doctor or other malware and spyware removal applications found on 2-viruses.com.

It is impossible to list all file names and locations of modern parasites. You can identify remaining parasites, other ContraVirus infected files and get help in ContraVirus removal by using free Spyware Doctor scanner. It comes with free real-time protection module that helps preventing ContraVirus and similar threats.

ContraVirus is classified as Rogue Anti-Spyware. After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake security messages, stating that your computer is infected with spyware and only ContraVirus can help you to remove it after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads ContraVirus trial version, it pretends to scan your computer and shows a grossly exaggerated amount of non-existent errors. Then, ContraVirus offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, ContraVirus does not only fix the errors, but it also takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer.

Some Rogue Anti-Spyware, such as ContraVirus, may offer users to buy it after the victim clicks on a banner or a pop-up while surfing the internet. Usually, a Trojan is installed to a victim’s computer after clicking on the advertisement. It then proceeds to download or even install ContraVirus, which is another way for Rogue Anti-Spyware to spread itself.

Most of rogue Anti-Spyware, such as ContraVirus, is nearly impossible to remove manually.

How to tell if your PC has been infected by a Rogue Anti-Spyware such as ContraVirus?

Numerous undesirable and annoying pop-ups: A typical Rogue Anti-Spyware parasite keeps track of your internet browsing habits, sending your browsing history data to remote servers, owned by third party companies that use this information to advertise their products via numerous pop-ups, toolbars, hijacked homepages and spam letters. All these undesirable advertising methods are used on the victims of Rogue Anti-Spyware.
Changed or new icons: Sometimes, Rogue Anti-Spyware installs unwanted software to a victim’s PC without user’s knowledge and consent. This may lead to slower PC performance and stability, as well as more unwanted programs you can't remove.

I think it is ridiculous on how these scams get into our systems and then you still have to dish out monies to correct the issues with other products. So the point is either spend the money are you are pretty much screwed.

I sent complaint emails to the registrar and the hosting server company. File complaints with ICAN or RIPE or whoever and get them off the web! We don’t have to take this..

First the contravirus popped saying I’d been infected. It offered a free scan. I clicked on the x in the corner and it started to download. I clicked on the x again and again when it froze. I used crtl alt del and it managed to shut down, including explorer which disrupted a search I’d been making.

A LOT of this type of CRAP is spread by spammy .INFO / .ORG sites, and ‘Redirects’ such as /.gy.by …for example. Apart from the Usual Virus Protection you (already) have ?!? … steer CLEAR of ANYthing that remotely LOOKS ‘SPAMmy’ :) /Just One Dialler Program in seven years online, (and even THAT didn’t manage to connect ;o)
