How to remove Centod?

What is Centod?

Centod (a.k.a Centod Anti-Spyware 2008) is a new corrupt anti-spyware program, bent on stealing people’s money. Don’t be fooled by this parasite’s legitimate-looking name - it is a rogue just like any other on the market today and a clone of Zynaps Anti-spyware. Centod uses trojans, such as Zlob or Vundo, to spread. These trojans typically disguise themselves as video codecs in porn/warez websites.

Once inside and active, Centod will flood the user with popups and fake system notifications to "inform" him of an infection on the system, the program will also provide a falsified system scan report, which lists many non-existent threats as real. While this information may not necessarilly be true, it creates a reason for the user to buy an anti-spyware program. Not just any anti-spyware program, but rather the "licensed version" of Centod. If you fall for this - consider yourself scammed.

The headline at centod.com claims the program is an "anti-spyware and anti-malware remover", which is a nasty play on double negatives and a surprisingly great representation of the program’s true nature. The testimonials are obviously fake, especially when you have in mind that the website was created 2 weeks ago and already it’s the best program of the best. Pretty much all the content found on Centod’s page is either fear-mongering or self-praise. You won’t find any valid contact information.

Centod is a scam and should be treated as such: do NOT download or buy it and block centod.com using your HOSTS file.

Thus, manual spyware removal is recommended for experienced users only, such as IT specialists or highly qualified system administrators. Centod is classified as Rogue Anti-Spyware. After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake security messages, stating that your computer is infected with spyware and only Centod can help you to remove it after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads Centod trial version, it pretends to scan your computer and shows a grossly exaggerated amount of non-existent errors. Then, Centod offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, Centod does not only fix the errors, but it also takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer.

Some Rogue Anti-Spyware, such as Centod, may offer users to buy it after the victim clicks on a banner or a pop-up while surfing the internet. Usually, a Trojan is installed to a victim’s computer after clicking on the advertisement. It then proceeds to download or even install Centod, which is another way for Rogue Anti-Spyware to spread itself.

Most of rogue Anti-Spyware, such as Centod, is nearly impossible to remove manually.

How to tell if your PC has been infected by a Rogue Anti-Spyware such as Centod?

Numerous undesirable and annoying pop-ups: A typical Rogue Anti-Spyware parasite keeps track of your internet browsing habits, sending your browsing history data to remote servers, owned by third party companies that use this information to advertise their products via numerous pop-ups, toolbars, hijacked homepages and spam letters. All these undesirable advertising methods are used on the victims of Rogue Anti-Spyware.
