How to remove Antivirus 7?

March 9th, 2010

What is Antivirus 7?

Antivirus 7 is a rogue anti-virus program that reports false threats and displays fake security alerts to convince you into thinking that your computer is infected with computer worms, trojan viruses and other malware. It pretends to be legitimate security software, but actually this fake program is promoted and installed through the use of Trojans and comes bundled with other malicious software. It goes without saying that Antivirus 7 is  a scam. Once installed and running, it will prompt you to pay for a full version of the program to remove the infections which don’t even exist. Obviously, you shouldn’t purchase it. Instead, please follow the removal guide below to remove this rogue program from your PC as soon as possible.

As a typical scareware, Antivirus 7 displays fake security alerts, notifications and system error messages to make you think that there are many serious problems on your PC. Just like the false scan results, these fake security alerts should be ignored too. What is more, Antivirus7 blocks Windows system tools and legitimate antivirus programs to protect itself from being removed. It may hijack Internet Explorer and display bogus security notifications claiming that the website you are about to visit is dangerous or hosts harmful files. That’s not true. The only real threat is Anti-virus 7 itself. You can remove this virus either manually or with an anti-malware program. Please read the removal instructions below and remove Antivirus 7 from your PC upon detection. Again, don’t purchase it. If you already did that, then contact your credit card company and dispute the charges.

Antivirus 7 is classified as Rogue Anti-Spyware. After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake security messages, stating that your computer is infected with spyware and only Antivirus 7 can help you to remove it after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads Antivirus 7 trial version, it pretends to scan your computer and shows a grossly exaggerated amount of non-existent errors. Then, Antivirus 7 offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, Antivirus 7 does not only fix the errors, but it also takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer.

Some Rogue Anti-Spyware, such as Antivirus 7, may offer users to buy it after the victim clicks on a banner or a pop-up while surfing the internet. Usually, a Trojan is installed to a victim’s computer after clicking on the advertisement. It then proceeds to download or even install Antivirus 7, which is another way for Rogue Anti-Spyware to spread itself.

Most of rogue Anti-Spyware, such as Antivirus 7, is nearly impossible to remove manually.

How to tell if your PC has been infected by a Rogue Anti-Spyware such as Antivirus 7?

Numerous undesirable and annoying pop-ups: A typical Rogue Anti-Spyware parasite keeps track of your internet browsing habits, sending your browsing history data to remote servers, owned by third party companies that use this information to advertise their products via numerous pop-ups, toolbars, hijacked homepages and spam letters. All these undesirable advertising methods are used on the victims of Rogue Anti-Spyware.
Changed or new icons: Sometimes, Rogue Anti-Spyware installs unwanted software to a victim’s PC without user’s knowledge and consent. This may lead to slower PC performance and stability, as well as more unwanted programs you can't remove.

I contracted AV7. It took me an hour to “fix” it. I could not delete it and of course it was interfering with everything and denied me as the administrator. From some fluke my window for startup programs appeared in my tool bar at the bottom of my screen. It said it was being blocked. I clicked on the icon and my startup program window opened up. In the list there was AV7 checked to start up everytime I would restart my computer. I unclicked it and rebooted as directed. I then went back to my c drive (program files)and tried to delete the file I could not delete before. It was sent to my trash and then my trash was emptied. I trashed all shortcuts etc. I then ran my McAfee which found nothing. I then ran SuperAntiSpyware (freedownload) and it found 7 trojans and over 600 adware cookies. It removed them. I then downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials and ran it. It came up with a clean comp. I went to my registry and cannot find anything listed that relates to av7 from what I have researched on the web. I am not sure 100% I am clean but the pop ups have stopped, I have administrator control, and after a week I have not had any problems. I know all these people are way smarter than me so I am not sure if it is gone. Only time will tell. But I would uncheck the box on av7 that I am sure is in your systems startup programs screen. good luck

I am one of the victims that paid for this scam. Now i am disputing it but my bank needs the website for the scam. Does anybody know the website?

    • August 11th, 2011 at 16:23 | #14

Jay: There were quite a few for antivirus 7, but this malware lost its popularity for more than a year. There were few payment gateways too, and they change all the time.

I’m sure that the makers of Anivirus 7 were arrested in June 2011.

    • August 11th, 2011 at 16:47 | #16

John: As far as I know, only middlemen were arrested. The ones that took the most of the money, not. Also, not so sure that they are behind particular fake AVs. There are more than single group that is quite similar in behavior.
