Fake Tax Refund Email is Spreading to Inboxes
At least 20.000 people have been recently sent an e-mail telling about tax refund deadline. The email pretends to have come from HM Revenue & Customs and gives a link to the application form online. Those who have received the email are recommended to fill it in. The form asks the details of your credit card or bank.
HM Revenue & Customs warn people to stay clear of such emails in order to protect their money and private data of their credit cards. Once you reveal you personal information, your account will be emptied. A spokesman of HMRC has announced that they inform about tax refund issues only by post and they never use telephone calls, emails or external companies to do that. It is strongly recommended to send the email to HMRC so they could study it systematically.
This is not the first time when people are tricked about tax refunds by cyber criminals. Last year about 5.8 million people filled their self-assesment form online expecting to get their taxes back. No one knows what it will be like this time.
HMRC is getting ready for a huge upsurge when people will not get any news about their taxes.
