WiFi Easily Susceptible to Hackers

August 3rd, 2007

According to Errata Security, users that think they’re safe while browsing the Internet while on WiFi connection, should think again. All their personal data is actually accessible to malicious intruders, and may be easily "sidejacked".

Using a simple WiFi network packet sniffer, hackers may gain access to a user’s cookies, which are left in a computer after each session at such websites as Gmail, BlogSpot, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, and Google Adsense. The mere fact that cookies are left after sessions make even the SSL-based login pages obsolete security-wise, as these cookies become accessible post-login. The main reason behind this seems to be high costs related to keeping the SSL encrypted pages throughout entire sessions, as such expenses are too much to bear even for the largest sites on the Net.

The only solution to this problem seems to be the use of powerful WiFi security tools that do not allow entrance by malicious individuals. Of course, you could just stick with secure WiFi networks, but this might make your WiFi mobility fly out the window. The choice is there, but leaving your WiFi connection unprotected is even more dangerous than it was before.
