Teen hackers' motivation revealed
August 20th, 2007
According to USA Today, a recent survey by American Psychological Association revealed that most of the teenage hackers commit illegal software activities more out of curiosity than out of criminal intent.
4,800 San Diego area high school students have been surveyed, and some facts from the results of the survey include:
•38% said they copied software without permission.
•18% went into someone’s computer or website without permission, and 16% took material.
The survey also showed that only one out of ten teenagers who used software illegally did it specifically to cause trouble. Among the reasons, curiosity, thrill and excitement topped the list, with criminal intent being in the bottom.
