October State of Spam Report
Symantec, a reputable computer security company, has presented its October state of spam report, where they analyze the current situation in the spam market. According to their research, spam featured an increase in numbers over October as opposed to September (which saw a slight decrease in internet spam), as spammers exploited the recent market slowdown and subsequent interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve in the U.S.
Homeowners and prospective homeowners have received larger quantities of spam letters to their email inboxes with offers of refinancing, home equity loans, and actual houses.
Image spam (email messages containing spam images to avoid anti-spam detection) is on the increase, with 7% of all spam falling into this category. However, with anti-spam technologies evolving, image spam numbers should fall in the future, as it gives way to the good-and-old HTML spam. With email spam still constituting 70% of all email traffic, it seems that the state of spam will remain roughly the same as in the past.
