New Security Freeware by McAfee, Secunia

July 31st, 2007

According to eWeek, security software developer and vendor McAfee is offering its clients new freeware security software named Rootkit Detective, as of July 26th. This application helps users neutralize the most malicious tools hackers use to infiltrate unsuspecting systems. The main purpose of Rootkit Detective is to clean malware before system boot and close the backdoors used by hackers to gain access to the computers of their victims. Rootkit Detective has accumulated an estimated 110.000  downloads since January, when the trial version of this tool has been released.

At the same time, Secunia has released the beta version of their new Secunia Personal Software Inspector, which is also a freeware security tool. However, Secunia PSI uses other methods to notify users if their software is vulnerable to attacks from beyond the Internet. Its built-in file scanner checks .exe, .dll and .ocx files and sends the data to Secunia’s servers to match it against the data in the Secunia File Signatures Engine to determine the exact applications installed on a user’s system. If a program in question features a certain security vulnerability, Secunia PSI notifies the user.
