Mozilla Developers Say Firefox 3.0 More Secure

October 10th, 2007

According to Computerworld, the folks at Mozilla have unveiled some of the features in the next Firefox series installment. So far they’ve reached version alpha 8, so the final release is still pretty far ahead. However, the hype is flowing already. So, what new and exciting features did Computerworld get to see in the 3.0 alpha?

The first and one of the most important aspects of the new Firefox, considering the context of our website, will be the new and improved malware blocker. What does it do? Well, it blocks malware, of course. Almost. Actually, it blocks malicious websites. It works in a similar way to the phishing alert in version 2.0 (there’s actually phishing alert in Firefox? We’ve never seen one), but this time the new Mozilla product will use information from Google on determining websites that contain malicious code. We just have to hope that this time it will be noticeable.

Next in the line, is Mozilla’s new technique that deals with corrupt Firefox plug-in updates. As we all know, there are thousands of Firefox extensions, and some of them are… you guessed it: malicious(!). So the new security improvement that the next-gen browser will bring, is that it will block plug-ins that are not hosted on Mozilla’s own website. Genius.

Anyway, although we’ve taken a more sarcastic approach towards Firefox in this post, it’s only because we take hype for what it is: just hype. We’ll see how it turns out when the final version of Firefox is available for download.
