Microsoft on a security rampage

Microsoft has made huge progress in the security field, since they started investing in it in 2003. The company's officials, however, are still unhappy with its effectiveness. Microsoft released Windows Live OneCare for consumers in 2006 and Forefront client security for enterprises earlier in 2007. The market they entered was filled with such expierienced security vendors as Symantec, McAfee and Trend Micro among others, so it was difficult to catch up.

In the beggining Live OneCare didn't do good in detecting malware at all and in May of 2007 the program's detection rate was as low as 76%, which has since grown to reach somewhere between 91 and 95%. There are many ways to improve this statistic, one is to increase the number of signatures, but in order for that to happen more analysts and research capacity are needed. Microsoft has said that they are investing a lot in both fields, but chose not to say how much.

Microsoft has opened three new malware research labs this year - in Tokyo, Dublin and Melbourne. This was done to enable response to users 24 hours a day globally. It now takes 6 to 8 hours to answer users' queries, while last year it took 3 days. Microsoft is still unhappy and says it should take no more than 6 hours to answer such security related queries.

The company is on a rampage of hiring new employees as well as stealing them from other security vendors such as F-secure and McAfee. They are also going to make new automatic tools for malware analysis.
