Macs no longer invulnerable
Apple got complimented in the worst possible way… Since Mac users used to be a relatively small community, most hacker attacks were made against Windows operating systems. The situation is changing: Macs are getting more popular and the community is growing together with the number of attacks.
"For a while, Mac users have enjoyed the benefits of being a small enough population that hackers didn’t go after them directly. That’s obviously now changing," said Ben Greenbaum of Symantec. This realization came due to a new attack, which was not actually intended to work against Macs in particular, but Windows as well.
The victims are probably the most expected bunch, meaning, of course, porn-surfers. They are led to believe that they are downloading a free video player, when in fact they are installing malicious code on their computers.
Apple reportedly knows about the threat and urges users not to download things from unknown websites. According to a spokeswoman from Apple, Lynn Fox, "Apple has a great track record for keeping Mac OS X users secure, and as always, we encourage people to install software only from trusted sources."
