There has been an attempt recently to hack U.S. Department of Defense unclassified email system. Although press said that this attack had some serious problems, it is now know that the attack only caused minor administrative disruptions and personal inconveniences, but no adverse impact.
According to infoworld.com the attack was attributed to China’s People Liberation Army, but the information wasn’t confirmed by any person responsible for investigation.
However, China is still the one to be blamed for this hack. It is believed that China savagely probed U.S. networks in order to gain intelligence. The attack was set in June and as a result of it 1,500 email users were taken offline.
It is excessively hard to track the origins of attack because hackers are usually using other computers they’ve hacked to launch attacks. Therefore, no complete statement about whose to blame can be made.
“The department’s Global Information Grid, which encompasses war fighting and civilian systems, is constantly scanned for weaknesses since those hackers are looking for exploits in commercial software and operating systems” says infoworld.com
Many countries are in danger of similar attacks. The problem is that not all of those may defend their selves. Moreover, not just hackers’ groups but whole nations are developing these capabilities of attacking or stealing information using internet. There have been various attempts of various countries to gain access or degrade information systems.
