Hackers’ conference in US
Hackers gathered in Las Vegas showed many ways how to crack electronic key-card systems. The opinion that computers inside buildings are secure was disclaimed without any trouble.
Hackers demonstrated how the locks used in jewelries, banks and even Pentagon or While House may be hacked in only a few seconds. They claimed that the Medeco (a Swedish company making electric locks), together with a number of other companies have the same weaknesses and nobody who has these locks is safe.
Medeco didn’t reply to the emails saying that their deadbolt locks were hacked and couldn’t be reached for a comment after conference.
Hackers flatly refused to publish details of unlocking key-card system in order to don’t cause any damage. And revealing such information undoubtedly would be noticed by thieves or maybe even by terrorists. He only said that it can be done in a few seconds with a strip of metal and a thin screw driver.
Another way to hack these locks is to splice a certain device into wires connecting key card readers to contact computer systems that control door locks.
This style of hack, also called “physical hack” also involves manipulating hardware instead of computer software. Electronic key scanner pads at doors are definitely easy targets for hackers.
The example about workers who step outside to have a smoke was given in a conference, according to theage.com.au. All hacker needs to do is splice the device into place and the encoded card can be used to command it to reply the last valid entry code or have the system access to people with legitimate cards. The consequence of this act may be the lock of all valid users leaving an access to only one card, controlled by the hacker. And for this moment no one could patch it.
Hackers found the only way to solve this problem – physical protect for computer.
