France and Russia join forces

September 28th, 2007

France and Russia have agreed to strengthen their efforts in fighting e-crime after the four day conference in Moscow, attended by investigators, representatives of big business and the police.

According to Christian Aghroun, who was the head of the French delegation, the purpose of the conference was to make the cooperation between said contries more personal.

The main problem discussed in the conference was internet fraud, but other touchy subjects, such as child pornography were also part of the debate.

The most substancial progress was made against phishing scams, a practice whereby spam-mail from seemingly legitimate sources fool users into giving their personal information such as credit card details and the like to hackers.

Aghroun blamed Russian organizations for being the ones behind these schemes, the victims of which are French people. He also said that it was time to get rid of the „myth“ of cyber-crime. Cyber crime is no longer a joke, as it was some time ago, when the only infection you could get was one from some geeky kid who programmed a virus at home just to test his knowledge of the system. It is a business now, with proffesionals and funds and laundering schemes.
