Firefox 3 beta 1 was released last month and there have been a lot of talks about it. Quite possibly the biggest concern is what security measures will be used to protect against malware and other malicious mechanisms.
Firefox 3 is thought to be a reassuring of Mozilla's position as the safest web-browser around. The new version has an anti-malware tool, similarly to the earlier version's anti-phishing tool. Firefox 3 will use Google's blacklist of websites that run malicious code. The user will be alerted if he is surfing to a website in the blacklist.
After trying the beta version, professionals say that even though tweaks are needed, the overall picture looks promising.
According to Mike Schroepfer of Mozilla, the main idea behind Firefox 3 is that it will save users from themselves.
"A big initiative was to give users more information about the Web site they are visiting. Does the site have an extended validation ticket and does it have a history of hosting malware? The goal is to better explain to the user where they are going and what the risks are, and to help them make rational choices," Shroepfer commented.
Among other functions Firefox 3 will have is the lock up function, which will disallow plugins to be downloaded from untrusted sources, a download manager with an implanted anti-virus.
