Adobes software is flawed

October 12th, 2007

Adobe Systems Inc., the makers of such respectable programs as Adobe Reader and Acrobat, have reported that these programs are flawed and may allow hackers access to users’ systems thus leading to many possible problems, such as the theft of personal information or the incorporation of systems into a botnet which would give hackers the opportunity to use it for illicit activities. i

Many users take the safety of Adobe programs for granted and don’t hesitate when opening suspicious files. Such a problem exists when it comes to many extensions, the popular opinion, for example, is that Word documents are safe, which isn’t necessarily the case.

Adobe took notice of the flaw when it was pointed out in an internet post and says that the software in question will be updated by the end of October, which leaves hackers with enough time to exploit the vulnerability. Until that time comes, Adobe has posted instructions of how to take care of security. The ways of protection include changing settings in a database that controls the way Microsoft Windows operates. Most home users, however, probably don’t have the necessary skills to do so so they will just have to wait until software updates. As for now, Adobe advises not to open any suspicious files.
