2 years in prison for AOL spam scam
November 6th, 2007
Todd Moeller, 28, who is said to have helped sending spam to more than 1.2 million AOL subscribers, was sentenced 27 months in prison after being caught making a deal with a government informant. Moeller told he could hide the source of the e-mails through his access to 40 different servers and requested 50 percent of the profits made advertising computer security software.
Moeller and Adam Vitale of New York sent spam messages to almost 1.3 million addresses of AOL subscribers in one week in August 2005, thus completing the deal with the informant. Prosecutors say he had also made $40,000 a month from other spam scam, promoting stocks. Moeller’s accomplice Vitale will be sentenced November 13.
